Converting hood hydralics to "stick" type

I hate hydralic hoods, mine randomly closes (stays up hours, or secs) and has almost slammed on my hand, and has hit me in the head when iam working on the SVX . I know I need new hydralics, or they will help, but it will start to happen again in a couple of years and they cost a decent amount. So i want to convert my hydralics to the other type were the metal "stick" holds up the hood, has any one done this? Could i take it from some other sube like a 1gen legacy and just drill a hole in the hood and mount it or will the hood be to heavy. Maybe i could lose 1 or 2 pounds also.

Here is a thread that gives a couple ideas:

I have a hood rod that came from another Subaru and was installed in the engine bay of my Blue 94 with the Carbon Fiber Hood. I will try to find the pictures of it. I think there are pictures of it in another thread. Try doing a search for it. :)
