Speedometer Problem and Check Engine Light

My speedometer does not work on my 1994 SVX and I was wondering if there is a cheap place to take it or if anyone has any info. on how to fix it yourself. Also, is the speedometer mechanical or electrical? Any help would be appreciated.

Another problem with my car is the Check Engine light turns on and off randomly. I do not know if it is a bad sensor or not. There seems to be no mechanical problems with my car and I notice it usually turns on when I go up a slight hill. Anyone know the reason for this?

The speedometer is electrical which runs off speed sensor 2. It's expensive. look here: http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...category=835-A

But that would be the good news. If it is the plastic gear in the front dif that the sensor runs off of, then the cost skyrockets to a thousand, due to they have to pull the transmission to replace it.

As for your check engine light, go here to Earthworm territory: http://www.svx-iw.com/

Do a search on "codes", and it will give you choices. The one you are concerned with now, is "engine trouble codes" but read them all to learn about next time. :)
