trans cooler operation
 

ok. I wanna install a cooler. I saw the the ways you can do it on the how to documents. Now i heard the stock cooler (one in the radiator) is a big rescrition. How should i do. Just pass the stock cooler and use the filter and cooler. or use the stock cooler, filter and new tranny cooler. i dont know what i should do.

I was thinking of putting the cooler in front of the ac condensor and pass the stock cooler. i'm changing out the external filter with a new subaru one and getting a cooler and just using the stock filter and that cooler. and put mobil 1 syntheic in it. I think i should be good. Would that bother it though in the winter even tho its going to be in a heated garage

The stock cooler is not a restriction, if it is clean, and is needed in cold places, to heat the ATF up to operating temp, so that it can select 4th.
I would remove the two hoses from the cooler and flush it out to remove any debris it there, then connect the new cooler between the filter and the stock cooler. That way new cooler can remove the excess heat, and the water cooler can keep the ATF at operating temp.

OK well, I would certainly do it the way I suggested, or you will never get it in to 4th or lock-up the converter.:)

Often, the flow through the cooler circuit is the problem and the overheating of the fluid is the symptom.

The stock cooler in the radiator is the subject of a long debate. Is it restrictive? Yes. How restrictive? It depends on if it is an original 92 radiator that came with the screen heat exchanger. It also depends on how you define "restrictive". In my opinion, it is too restrictive and is a risk not worth taking. However, some of the aftermarket coolers are just as restrictive if not more so.

Providing that your radiator cooler is not restricted AND the lower part of the radiator is cleaned on the outside you do not need an additional cooler for a stock setup. If you are going to an aftermarket cooler, you would do best to make an improvement in flow through the cooling circuit to make sure that there is as much possible fluid flowing through it and that there is no blockage. That way there is an improvement in cooling and in fluid flow. Take your new cooler and blow through it with your mouth. If it feels like you're blowing through a straw you're gonna do more harm than good.

Its a good debate i know. ha, but it seems like if i do the stock cooler it would be a problem and if i bypass it would be a problem ahhhhh! :confused: ha. I figured i put it underneath the fender? good place? or in the front of the ac condenser but it seems like that wouldnt get much air to the cooler.

This is the ideal configuration and will keep your trans pan at 150-160f under most conditions. It is also very high flow, much more than twice as much as the stock. It's not a difficult install and can be said and done for $250. High, but it will take care of your transmission. If anything it is way overkill, especially on a stock setup. My trans has a valve body mod that makes it route much more fluid through the cooler circuit than stock and this will keep my pan below 200 in stop and go traffic when it is 100 outside. That's remarkable. I have not driven it in extreme cold but so far it heats up about the same as stock and much better than when I had a front mounted cooler.
