Uh oh. Strange SVX noise. :\
 

On the way back from some errands tonight, my SVX started making a weird noise. At under 40mph, you can't hear it. At 45, you can barely hear it. At 55-65 you can definitely hear it. It sounds like a 'whirring' noise... my guess is that its either the rear differential or a wheel bearing... it can't be my tires, they're pretty new. Anyone have a sure fire way to find out?

Well at first guess I would say it may be the start of a wheel bearing failure. :( I say that just because it's common and I've been there twice. (just replaced the rear driver side, replaced the passengar side 1.5 year ago)

One day I just started noticing the sound at over 40mph, and the faster I went, the louder it got. And the longer I waited (a couple months in each case) the louder it got at each speed range. Until I couldn't stand to drive on the freeway anymore, that's when I knew it was a bearing. :eek:

Sounds like you are in the pretty early stages if that is the case. If it keeps getting louder and louder but drives find I'd say this is it. There's probably a sure fire way to find out asap though. I heard get the car on a lift and try moving the wheel from side to side and see if it moves. I'm sure someone will chime in more on that method.

Don't rule out rear diff. though. Just offering my experiences, I'm definitley no tech.

DAMMIT! thats what I'm leaning towards too. Know why? Its the SAME side that the stupid lady hit me on. >:| She hit me RIGHT on the wheel. And I already sent in my estimate.

ARGH. Guess I'll go get an estimate on that tomorrow and send that in too.

diff will be noisy mostly under load
bearing will always make noise
broken tire or badly aligned wheel create noise like bearing due to uneven wear one tire

noise???
 

I think you are absolutely right

Even a Neon powered guy should have figured that out, especially if you were hit on the wheel as you were...

Just fix it and send the estimate/receipt to the insurance co. Better now than later!

Oddly enough, my NEON had wheel bearing problems. What's weirder still is that no other neon owner that I know of has ever had a wheel bearing problem (and I know a lot of them!).

If it is a wheel bearing you can find out which side by pitching the car back and forth (slalom like) as you drive down a deserted road. The noise will be louder as the affected bearing bears the weight of the outside of the turn (if my description is comprehendable by anyone but me). That will confirm it for you. My guess is that it is the wheel she hit. It only makes sense :rolleyes:. Hope you are able to claim it and make sure they replace the hub as well or any future bearings will go bad just as quickly...good luck! :)

Probibly the wheel bearing, i have both to do as soon as i recieve them, ordered them the other day.
