NFS 5MT: The Situation
 

Story so far:

02 WRX trans has issues, turns out **** is busted like the tech at SIAS has never seen.

Rather than the gears being chewed up, they were fine, so I may have bought an LGT swap kit for nothing. Well, they do still have their advantages. Anyway, money is currently an issue due to recent SVXpenses.

The options I was given was to find another transmission and use it as a parts source, or just use it and throw stuff in. Pricey, sure.

The other option I have is to replace all the worn parts, with the added risk that failure may be impending due to the "shrapneltastic" nature of the damage incurred. I priced this out, totally comes to over $1000.

I looked around and found an 07 WRX trans. From what I see so far the only difference is it has a 3.7 final rather than 3.9.

1) Is there any reason I can't toss the 07 trans in the car?

2) Is there any reason I can't pull parts from the 07 trans?

3) Anyone got any better ideas?

the 07 transmission, you will also need to change the rear differential out.

I would suggest finding an already toasted early WRX transmission since 2nd/3rd gears commonly fail. Find one cheap and put your new gears in. This will allow you to keep the rear diff as is. That's my immediate thoughts, but some others will probably, and most likely have a better idea.:p

What about its internal parts, which are the ones that creates the need for a different diff? The guy with the trans might even have that, I'll have to see when he replies. I wonder though, if I would need a different clutch kit.

I believe it is the 02-05 WRX 5 spds that have the 1.1:1 center diff that allow the stock SVX rear diff to be used. (might be 06 included in that as well) The 02 and 03 WRX have the weaker gears in them and are very prone to failure. If you found one, you should be able to get it for just a couple hundred dollars and then just have the shop put in the new gears that you already picked up. Should end up cheaper than completely rebuilding your old trans, cheaper than getting a new good transmission, could end up cheaper than finding a 3.70 rear diff and the installation to match the 3.70 front differential although that would be my close second choice if I were you.

I do feel that a used trans gear swap is ideal, but parts are always scarce up here. I will be very lucky if I can find an 02-05 series trans.

Understandable. Well, start looking for a 3.70 rear differential to match the 3.70 transmission you found, as well as either a good or messed up early WRX trans.

With as much as the old 5 spd got messed up, I would be concerned about using anything from that transmission...

I guess wait for the more knowledgeable to chime in before making up my mind. Good luck. Hopefully the labor rate isn't too bad at the shop you're at?

It's pretty standard raep, just a hair under $100/h, but ran by well-known and trusted Nabisco'ers.

Edit above, already sourced a trans, maybe.

hey NikFu S check out www.car-part.com it's a good place to get some soob parts for reasonable prices.

Yes, but it turns out that would cost twice as much as what I paid. ;) I offered $650 for the trans, delivered to the shop (owner was from out of town).

So I bought this guys' transmission today. He claims it is an 02 with an 05 center diff and a couple other upgraded components.

I took another look at my old trans, the interior was scored with pock marks from the shrapnel floating around. It's pretty awesome.

My tech has also inexplicably found a drive shaft, that will fit without modification.
I asked him what car it was from, he says he *thinks* it's from an Outback but he is not sure. I asked him to take measurements.


The car will be back together in a couple days with a superior clutch, gear set, drive shaft, and a more reliable install. :o
