repair costs
i was a looking around this Consumer Guide site and looked up the SVX. here are some of their repair costs for it:

Alternator rebuilt for less than $100USD, and installation is less than 1/2 hour... So if someone's willing to pay $1000/hour labour for working for the SVX, I'll change careers. :D VK |

You can probably get an aftermarket for around 70.00. Depending on labor costs, you might get by for around 800.00. That's why you have all the work you can have done in that area of the car, while they've got the pulley and stuff off. Save yourself the labor cost in the future. |
i got a new timing belt, cam seals, water pump, and alternator at the same time for about 700-750. All work done by my mechanic. They also told me replacing cv joints would be around 350 a piece for new ones, and that they could re-boot them for about 100- 150. labor included in all prices mentioned.

hmm....i was under the impression that getting the timing belt done on an SVX wasn't that big of a deal. i figured over $500 was alot. if that included a new water pump, that might be an alright price.

I generally do, but I as I do not have a garage, or a place to work on it at this point, Im stuck... Stupid Apt Complex Rules...

Weird. I think as long as you have a shop manual, anythings possible. I've replaced headgaskets on my old charger, neon, and I'll do whatever I need to hte SVX (when I get one) because labor is $$$$$$$$$$$$$

I wouldn't mind working on it myself. But with the mechanic i get a warranty. Plus when something breaks, being as the svx is my only car, i need it fixed ASAP. If i had weeks to wait i would order parts online and do it myself. But i simply don't have the time. I am planning on doing my own cv, just remove a couple bolts and pop it out of there.

I will repair the things I have the tools, time and patience to repair. But, when it comes to the more complicated matters, I'd rather leave it to the professionals. For instance, wheel bearings. Generally, a pretty "toast" job on most cars. Not so on the SVX. I'd MUCH rather pay to have it done right the first time than to have to pay to have something "re-fixed" that I've made "the dog's dinner" of.

i know my limits, and when to conserve the skin on my knuckles! sometimes, though, doing your own work is an excuse to buy a new tool :D
