checklist for svx revamp... whats needed?

hey all,

first off:
i love my svx. i have to, or else i would go crazy dealing with these things:lol:

now,
my beast of ~200k just threw a rod or something similarly vicious, because my engine knocks and its just barely even movable now. i was 300 miles from home and it was 5am:barf: it sucked. so i u-hauled the ***** home and i am now picking up the pieces ....

so, when faced with the options:
1. trash/part her out :(
2. get a new one and leave her in the boneyard and eventually rape her of parts :(
3. fix her:o:rolleyes::)

i decided that option 3 is probably the best option, since i am this deep into svxophilia that i might as well hang on forever.

so here goes
i am going to fix her, but i am ammassing the parts first.
i need

- engine
......-ebay etc ...or a rebuild?
......- what to look for, what to replace before installation etc
......-performance cams?
- engine mounts
.......- stock or group-n modified?
- front swaybar bushings
.......-stock or urethane?
- clutch for the 2002 wrx tranny
.......-stock or performance?

my question is, are there any other things i should do while im in there?
what would you guys reccommmend? any tricks or ideas? or should i just say f-it and save to buy a whole nother svx and use this one for parts? tough choices... thanks for any input from fellow svxers.. im sure im not the only one who has had this predicament or similar...

thanks

if it was the case to say f-it everytime one of these bad boys decided to act like a ***** then well no svx would be left. I just forked out over almost 3000 dollars in the past month to get mine running right and it still isnt but I'll be damned if I am going to sell it. Keep and enjoy it once its fixed.

Fine out what is wrong first =D
Where do you live btw?

Sorry to hear about your engine trouble.:(
You don't need this advice since you have already decided, [:p] but Option 2 is probably the better/more economical way to go here.

An engine from a low miles wreck will be the cheapest option, or possibly a low miles JDM import. They tend to be good. But you seem set on a rebuild............. :D

what to look for, whatever engine you use, take off the intake manifold and replace all the rubber vacuum tubes. They will be brittle, possibly leaking.

Performance cams only if you must. Dubious gains.

Stock engine mounts IMO

Urethane bushings

Either would be good.
If you go performance, Exedy or something, make sure you get multi-plate. Otherwise it will be ON/OFF which is OK or good for track, but a real pain in town driving.

The f-it option would be my first choice. Best of luck with your replacement, whichever you decide.

Joe :)

I would guess that you'd have to bend the coolant lines the other way around, and it should pop right in. That was all I really had to do to the engine every time I did a sr20 swap in a 240. Everything else should be swapped over from your current motorset.

I think you picked the best option by the way. Since it's your car, there won't be any surprises that we normally end up with when we get another chassis. Also, you're essentially breathing new life into the car. I'm dying for a manual swap, but I can't justify it at this point since I still have school to pay for and the original tranny, despite hitting almost 150k miles, is still fine.

I would try and find one that's wrecked or something to yank the engine, etc out of, Patrick (nextse7en) got one for I think $500, made it back and then some selling parts! I don't know but he MIGHT still have the engine...
