we just bought this BRAT any suggestions?

my little brother just bought this 85 brat and he is only 15 and now he has 2 cars (the other is a 84 GL hatchback) i was just wondering what people think of it and what we should do first as in modifying it

whats wrong with being 15......

anyways that cars awesome lol the thing that freaked me out the most was the spare tire in the engine compartment since there no other place for it....i just thought it was a bit weird but hey look at the svx its pretty weird too :p

good luck with it....you should lift it and make it all off road sytle!!!

Nice looking Brat :D:D

If he's not a member already send him over to www.Ultimatesubaru.net

Enjoy it, I love mine as much as my SVX :D:D

No need to do any mods to it. Should cruise just fine at 75. There is very few vehicles on the road that are better for snow and most offroading (until you get into specialized stuff). I drove mine straight up an intermediate ski slope with crappy $20 tires on it. The closest competion only made it 3/4 in a Toy PU with off road tires.

Put a complete WRX drivetrain in it with a 5 speed. It would run like a banshee! It's gotta weigh less then a WRX sedan. 250+ hp in a BRAT would be awesome.

It weighs 2280 with a 1/2 tank of gas. The engine in it is probably the best Subaru ever made in terms of reliablity and durablity. Sadly the WRX engine is not. With a carbed engine you'd have to also change the fuel tank and pump, the engine won't fit w/o serious work. The transmission I don't think would ever fit.

well we were already plannin on fixin the body and repainting it and of course a lift, but were were thinkin about making it 6 lug so we could put bigger tires on it after the lift and not those cheap peugot rims that r ugly so...

Some early Subarus had an adjustable suspention, like my 86 Loyale wagon for example.
So maybe a lift is as easy as adjusting it?
Take a look at the coil springs in front for an adjuster set up, and as I remember in the back it was like a motorcycle shock, turn the collar for more lift.
Of course any modification to the suspention requires a four wheel alignment.
We also would advance the timing just a little bit, like 12 degrees BTDC , instead of the stock 6BTDC. (or whatever it was, we are talking 20 years ago).
Another thing we would do is carefully drill out the plug that covered the idle air/fuel mixture screw at the front of the carburator base.
This way we could richen the mixture "for improved driveability".
Of course if you drill incorrectly, you now have to replace the carburator.

You think these are ugly??

You could also do the five lug swap off of an XT6 to expand your rim choice...

Take a look at subarubrat.com. you will get plenty of info and ideas. six bolt toyota rims are the easyist swap to upgrade.
