titling steering wheel trouble
 

i was just wondering if there is anywhere that i can find the instructions for the steering wheel. i think it should be simple enough, but it only locks in the farthest down position.

Memory
 

Perhaps you haven't reset the memory. There is a third lever way under the column to set the position of the steering wheel. I thought mine was broken too until I found the lever. Good luck...

Hehe... I can honestly say this very thing drove me nutz for a while.

As Mike says, its the secret hidden lever that holds the key. On the left hand side of the steering column is the telescopic lever which pulls the steering closer and farther from you. But, the secret-took-me-forever-to-find-lever is underneath the steering column, back where the dash and column meet. The lever is housed in a small "depression" in the back middle of the column.

STEERING WHEEL LOCKING LEVER SHIM OR KEEPER
 

I HAD MY 92 IN THE SHOP A COULPLE OF YEARS AGO PARTLY BECAUSE I COULDN'T GET THE STEERING WHEEL TO LOCK EXCEPT IN THE ALL THE WAY DOWN POSITION. THE SHOP FIXED IT AND THE MECHANIC SAID THAT HE JUST HAD TO ADJUST A SHIM OR KEEPER TO GET THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK LEVER TO ENGAGE.

WELL MINE WORKED FINE FOR SIX MONTHS OR SO.

I HAVE BEEN DRIVING IT WITH THE STEERING WHEEL FLOATING.
IT TAKES A LITTLE GETTING USE TO LIKE THE WINDOWS, BUT IT'S NOT TOO BAD.

ANYONE WANT TO SHARE THE PROCEEDURE FOR FIXING THE SHIM OR HAVE AN ILLISTRATION OF THE SHIM?

Yea i had no idea about the lever under the steering wheel either. I always thought that it tilt all the way up or all the way down and that the steering wheel was screwy. Then my cousin adjusted it and i felt like a moron.:p

Dwayn, it sounds like you have what I thought I had until I found the third lever. Make sure you are not paying a mechanic to just pull the right lever for you.

For my 95 (same for all?) I have two levers on the left hand side of the steering column where it meets the dash. One is labeled "Lift up" and returns the steering wheel to its full upright position, and leaves it "floating" until you pull it back to where you have it locked at. Sounds like yours, like mine was, is locked at its lowest position, making it very hard to move your leg/foot from the gas to the break pedal. Next to that is a lever marked "Telescopic" which when used allows you to adjust the steering wheel's distance from you

But there is a third lever, its label is also on the left hand side marked "Tilt Knob". Its label is misleading as the lever is under the column near where the dash meets the underside. That lever is what sets the locking position of the wheel.

Thats what I found with mine and now am very happy that I can set the steering wheel where I want.

I think I may have found that once, but forgot about it.

THIRD LEVER
 

MY THIRD LEVER STOPPED WORKING A LONG TIME AGO.

I JUST GOT MY STEARING WHEEL TO LOCK IN A POSITION OTHER THAN THE LOWEST POSIBLE POSITION THIS EVENING.

THERE ARE THESE LITTLE STAIRS UNDER THE MIDDLE OF THE STEARING WHEEL RIGHT IN THE CENTER NEXT TO THE DASH
AND THIS ROLL PIN LOOKING THING WITH A SPRING ON IT
MOVES UP THESE STAIR AND GETS LOCKED AGAINST A BARRIER.

SO I TOOK A BIG SCREWDRIVER AND I PUSHED THE ROLL PIN LOOKING THING DOWN THE STAIRS.

THIS MAY NOT BE PROPER PROCEEDURE, BUT IT ENABLED ME TO LOCK THE STEARING WHEEL BOTH ON MY PARTS CAN AND ON MY 92.

locking stuborn steering wheel adjustment
 

Steering wheel height adjustment.
My third lever, the one under the steering wheel, right next to the dash won’t lock the steering wheel the way it is suppose to.
There are these little stairs just above the third lever under the middle of the steering wheel right in the center next to the dash
And this roll pin looking thing with a spring on it moves up these stairs and gets locked against a barrier.

So if I get out a flashlight I can see the little stairs and the roll pin looking thing.
Then if I pull the lift lever on the left of the driver’s side of the steering wheel I can pry the roll pin looking thing by placing the tip of a long screwdriver against the roll pin and using the steering wheel as a folcrom.

Then I can adjust the height of the steering wheel by bypassing the lever on the left side of the steering wheel and only using the lever under the steering wheel.

Using the lift lever on the left side of the steering wheel seems to knock my locking position back to where it only works in the lowest position.

I am sure something is out of adjustment or worn out which forces me to use this other method.
