How's your OEM jack holding up?

Kind of hard to see, but the main pivot pin is shearing through on mine. It didn't drop the car, and fortunately I was lifting it high enough to put some 2x10's under the tires (perks of a lowered car). But either way, she's done. I might replace that pin with a good high strength bolt. One thing I like about the SVX jack is that it's pretty low profile and can get under my car. Or maybe I'll just look for a small aluminium floor jack. |
Re: How's your OEM jack holding up?
I used to carry a lightweight aluminum racing jack in the trunk for emergencies, but it took up too much room. Stays in the garage now.
Now I just carry a 1.5 ton scissor jack and a 12" x 12" piece of deck board for support on uneven ground. My OEM jack has never been used and will stay that way. I NEVER felt comfortable or safe with that design. . |

Two out of the four I've owned have dropped a car and bent. My driveway and parking area are sand and gravel, very uneven and many soft spots. I try to avoid using the two remaining good ones. When I do I put a large board underneath.
They're small and handy and lift quickly but are very unstable. They need a bigger foot. |

Yep, I bent an OEM one too.

Re: How's your OEM jack holding up?
After my original (cheapo) floor jack failed, I replaced it with one of those big 3 ton jacks. I feel so much better now with a decent jack. As bad as that cheap jack was, it was still better than the OEM. That OEM jack is an accident waiting to happen, scary.

It is dangerous to use. I have heard of more problems than it working. I would get another jack that can be trusted. :)

Re: How's your OEM jack holding up?
Oh don't worry, I never use that one for any real work on the car. I have my 3-ton floor jack that's served me well since I bought my car. But it's about 100 lbs, so I definitely need to find an alternative for roadside emergencies.

Disconcerting to consider how many such maginally-engineered items as the SVX jack make it to the marketplace. dcb |
Re: How's your OEM jack holding up?
There was a time, when I was first learning to work on my own cars, that I used the stock jack relatively frequently. It didn't take long before I bought a real floor jack, though - the one that came in the trunk is downright scary!
