NEW TRANNY PROBLEM <long>

well, here's the situation, which I believe spells the end of my svx days..... just got timing belt replaced and alternator re-aligned, and car was running great for about 2 days...

The shifting a week ago went like this.. (i believe)
car would go from first stright into 3rd, and stay there, even on highway. 60 mph@4000rpm...

If i put the car into 3rd while driving in D, i could feel the car pull back a little....

ANYWAY

last night on my way home i stop at a light, when the light turns green i go.... first no prob, then rpms pinned and car wouldnt move. i push it home, try it a few more times, to no avail.

so this morning i start the car, let it warm, and put it in D... IT catches! i proceed down the block, 1/4 mile or so, and RPMs pin again, not moving the car at all... IM STUCK!

until i turn the car off for about 30 seconds, restart, put the car in D, and voila! 1/4 mile more until it happens again.

i could choose to repeat this every few minutes, nut id rather take the bus....

please tell me there's an easy fix for this!!!

I don't think there is an easy fix for this problem. Sounds like the trans is dead to me.

Sorry.

thats what i figured... shop wants to rebuild it... is this the smartest idea? (would love to do a swap to a 5 speed, but no shops in my area will take on the job)

Rebuilding or getting a trans from a different subaru would be your best and maybe only option. The 5 speed swap would be great but unfortunatley not alot of shops want to take on that job....alot of the people take the time to do it themselves. How much did they say would be a rebuild?

quoted me a price bet. 2000 and 2500....

that doesnt sound like a bad price.

"For those contemplating parking their own SVX in the home garage, there are only a few mechanical problems to look out for - transmission wear, noisy wheel bearings and warped discs. It is said that adding a fluid cooler extends transmission life but, in any case, transmission replacements aren't too expensive. It appears that the auto transmission that comes attached to JDM import Liberty twin-turbo motors is very nearly the same as the SVX's and potentially interchangeable - these are often available very cheaply, since most people transplanting a twin-turbo motor usually ditch the auto trans. Note that we've also seen complete JDM SVX half-cuts for $4500."

Is that true? Anyone knows about it?

My car got the same problem :-(

Can we really replace SVX tranny with Liberty's?
