Subaru SVX EG-33 does it again !!!

The Ghost Run Air Race took place yesterday, 21 October 2017. Our Subaru EG-33 powered Glasair dominated all other piston aircraft. The average speed over a 155 nautical mile course was 256.91 MPH. This is the sixth S.A.R.L. air race that we have run in for the 2017 season. Our Glasair/Subaru EG-33 has taken either first or second over all other piston powered aircraft.
Man, I love this Subaru!

Congratulations!!!
Now that's what I call a worthy use of an EG-33.

Which model of Glasair do you pilot?

Epic! Any pictures/video/websites we can take a look at?

I'm hoping to start a Velocity XL some time in the next 5-7 years once my mortgage is cleared off, but am leaning more towards a Lycosaurus for it. The EG33 is a bit small for the big Velo but I believe a few of the smaller SE's are Subaru-powered.

Re: Subaru SVX EG-33 does it again !!!

Blacky, the model is a Glasair I RG. Currently I have over 650 hours of flight time on the engine. I estimate that 75% of that time is at 4800 RPM or greater. Another 3% or 4% has been at 5100 RPM, this is our race RPM. Races are 35 to 45 minutes long and the engine is run at 5100 during the entire race.
The EG-33 is a rock solid engine … I wish Subaru never stopped production of the SVX and EG-33 engines.

Chris, I have about a dozen YouTube videos posted. Several years ago I had a brake line failure on landing, the plane ended up in a small ditch, this video was shot shortly after repairs were made https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iTtLqF3A2I There is a quick shot of the engine at the end of that video. And this link is a quick fly-by https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImsS7S6Uhog
You may be correct, a Velocity may be too heavy for the EG-33. The empty weight on my Glasair is only 1275 pounds.

Very nice plane and videos too.

Cool video! Am I the only one who thought of Rocky IV when watching the first video?

Wow, glad you were able to get it all back together and back in the air. Got to love experimental - incidents like that are so much easier to fix than the certified world. My club had a 172 involved in a hard landing a couple years ago - prop strike, wrinkled firewall, etc. Repair estimate was $62,000 (CAD). We ended up with a new plane.

Is your radiator door actuator airspeed controlled?

The Velocity SE's come in around that weight range and most are IO-360 powered, so an EG33 would be a perfect powerplant for them. The XL's, particularly the RG variant, come in anywhere from 1800-2000 lbs depending how tricked out the builder makes it.

What sort of fuel burn and MPG do you see in your plane?

Chris,
We always run an in-cockpit camera on every flight. Since you know about landing incidents I thought you may have an interest in this video of the last 60 seconds of our landing accident. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEMZMF75IDs
The radiator door is pilot controlled, we keep the water temp around 190 to 195F.
In cruse engine RPM is about 4900 with a fuel burn of about 11.5 GPM or 20 MPG.
At race power, about 5100 or 5200 RPM, we burn 15 or 16 GPM that gives 16 MPG.
