Front differential - GEEZZZZZZ

Hi...me again...92 model. 141,000 mile...great shape..EXCEPT...had to replace the rear differential....not bad...I started getting a click in the front end...replaced the axels, rotors, calipers, still get this CLUNK...CLUNK...CLUNK. Took it to the mechanic today...he thinks either the tranny is shot, or the differential is shot. Can't seem to find either one anywhere for sale...My questions...does anyone have an idea what might be wrong and where I can find parts.2. Are these parts I need interchangeable with any other Subaru? I'm just about ready to sell it as I am tired of working on this car....thanks and sorry this is so long....pat

Most likely it is the front differential. I had the same thing happen to my claret. I tried another SVX transmission (2 different SVX trans but that another story:mad: ) but the one I got also had a failing front diff. I decided to go with the 4.44 auto trans from a legacy GT. The car is performing better than ever. I have fallen in love all over again. If you have any questions about the 4.11 or 4.44 EAT ask SVXfiles or Budfreak...or any other SVXer with the experience.

Good luck.

If it is more like a CLICK CLICK CLICK than a CLUNK CLUNK CLUCK it could be your flex plate. You hear this real well if you lay down near the front of the AT. It open in this area and the sound comes out.

Flex plate will also make the noise when the engine is running but the car is in park.

A front diff will only clunk when the car is moving.
