Fuel question

A friend of mine has a 95 Legacy wagon. Apparently when the fuel gauge gets below 1/2 tank, it will sometimes just shut down on them. If they pull off the road for about 10 minutes it starts up fine again, and they can be on their merry way to get more gas. The gauge is correct because at 1/2 tank it takes about 6 gallons. They have been told it could be air in the fuel lines...

Any thoughts?

Re: Fuel question

If it's just air in the fuel lines it wouldn't take 10 minutes to start up...

I had a 91 honda accord (long before my SVX and VR6) and when I got it, it had a fuel leak.... it was just forward of the fuel tank and when I shut down the the whole line drained. The only thing that you'd notice is that starting after it had been sitting for more than 20 minutes, you would need to crank for about 6-8 seconds to refill the line... I'd imagine that if it was just an air bubble it would simply burp through and you wouldn't likely notice anything (especially if it was a manual or on the highway) because it would basically just push-start itself by the time you even realized what happened.

I would suspect the fuel pump is going out. Electric pumps in general can basically lock up when they overheat (happens often when burning out), and as soon as they get a chance to cool off you can start them again..... if that is the case it won't last all that long.
