OT- Chevy Big Blocks

I'm watching some "Trucks" show on TNN and they're building a project truck from the ground up. I happened to catch the segment where they installed the engine. Chevrolet just built a 575 cubic inch crate engine which allegedly puts out 625 horses and about 650 pound feet. I'm not generally such a huge fan of american muscle, but I would die a happy man if I owned that motor.

Okay. Just did. All the funny cars use HEMIS. Or a derivative from them. The Chrysler Hemi is the greatest v8 ever produced.

Do you even know what HEMI means? You have something confused here. HEMI refers to the head/valve design in some chrysler big blocks. NO chevy engine uses that "technology". Chrysler would have a heart attack and lawsuits would fly. The only variation on chevy's drag engines that i know of is that some use VORTEC heads. Chrysler itself no longer uses HEMI heads because the loss in fuel economy and insane maintenance costs/requirements far outweigh their performance benefits.

If the HEMI V8 is the greatest V8 ever produced, then why is it not still being produced in any way, shape, or form?

AutoTchr 10-07-2002 07:04 PM

just cause an engine is a hemi doesn't mean that it is a chrysler product. Ford produced a hemi as well. as far as the best v8??....how about the ford 427 SOHC. An american OHC in the 60's.

Bottom line is that each of the big three have had success and yes mopar has had their share.

John Force drives a Ford with a Ford engine. And I believe that last statement puts the finishing touch on this conversation.

Landshark 10-07-2002 07:20 PM

actually, the new Chrysler 300(N?) will have a Hemi engine. even if its the best engine in the world, it will be surrounded by crap. :D

you know what engine more people need to look into is the buick 3.8 liter v6 turbocharged. now that is an engine that can keep up with a lot of big block v8's

even the UN-turbo'ed version in my old Lesabre T-Type moved it pretty well. the rattle-over-every-bump plastic interior was another story
