Two Coolant Questions
 

I've noticed when I get out of my car the faint smell of coolant. When I pop the hood I can smell it but dont see anything leaking. I should also mention that its unbelievably hot under the hood, although the temperature gauge never goes above halfway. Anyway, my two questions are:

1) any idea where that coolant smell comes from? Is it normal? (OK, thats 2 questions), and

2) How do you remove the coolant overflow tank. It looks like it might be dry but its hard to tell. I'm inclined to think that maybe that last time the coolant was changed, they didnt do the overflow tank.

I got the answer to my 2nd question. It was easy enough to remove the overflow tank. There was a small amount of coolant in it, but it was filthy inside. I'll try to clean it but will order another one if I cant get it clean.
