Knock sensor

My check engine light keeps flashing on and off periodically for code "22...knock sensor on right side". I understand knock sensors allow cars to run on lower octane fuel, but other then that is it a big problem? Also, since it is flickering on and off does that mean it could be a faulty sensor?

If you want to test the sensor then swap the 2 knock sensors. If the problem follows the sensor you have your solution. If not you will need to look into why your engine is knocking.

could it just be knocking due to a bad tank of gas...it was 93 though

the SVX's knock sensors will go bad over time -- usually mileage approaching 180k miles. Their casings will crack and the harness lead will get brittle and crack. By not replacing them, you're letting them tell the engine to pull back timing that, most likely, doesn't need to be pulled back - thus hurting engine performance.

Thanks.....got one more question :) Does the check engine light always come on for only a second if there is a problem?

Earthworm 07-05-2006 10:31 AM

It stays on as long as the problem is currently occurring.

Suby Fan 07-05-2006 04:10 PM

hummm i wonder if thats what my code is.... (to lazy to check it) mine will come on for a sec too.... i though i was seeing things the first few times because when i was turning and it was coved up... i saw it for a 1/10 of a sec and was like... wait did.... nooooo... it would stay on... that happend 3 times... yeah i would replace the knock sensor they go bad... i see them go bad usually around 100k in MN

Crysis 07-05-2006 07:19 PM

yeah..mine flickers on real quick. Well i am pushing 122k, so its probably time to replace. ;/

Nomad 07-07-2006 01:49 PM

hummm..yeah , mines is 210 000 k , and a code for the left one appears...I've read the how to but...im not sure... is it like a bolt? I've seen pictures but , i just dont understand how to unbolt them as i want to do it by take off only the alternator but not the entire intake as im not mechanicaly inclined for now......i learn :D

Earthworm 07-07-2006 02:34 PM

Without removing the intake it's best to have a 2nd person to help.

It can be done this way and this is the most common way to change the sensors.

The sensors are shaped like a mini-doughnut and the bolt goes through the center to hold it in place.

ok so, all we do is unscrew , take it off, check the wires , put in the new one and thats it? doesnt seems to hard... thanks :D

Nomad 07-07-2006 03:46 PM

yes for the hands but, i got a friend that works mechanical stuffs with me and he'S real skinny and small :D

is there a how-to on these knock sensors. I am new to working on cars :) and dont know where to even start. If anyone could give me a general idea of where there at and what they look like it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
