Mad climate control
 

I'm completely new to SVXs having bought mine a 92 model at an auction a fortnight ago. Its a great car but it has few problems that I'd like to resolve, the most annoying being the climate control.

Basically the temperature control part of the climate control seems to have a mind of its own. Apart from the temperature problem it seems to function perfectly.

In normal use the temperature control defaults to the maximum setpoint (32 degrees C in the UK). After it has been adjusted to the correct temperature (about 22 degrees C) the setpoint then climbs in half degree stages to the maximum again.
Occassionally it works correctly and maintains the set temperature and occassionally it automatically adjusts itself up or down by a couple of degrees or adjusts itself to the minimum setting (18 degrees C).

Has anyone suffered similar problems and did they ever find the cause. At the moment a fix that works most of the time is to set the temperature then jam a piece of paper in the temperature switch to hold it in the down position.

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

We had the same problem. It seems to be the contacts inside the actual rocker switch itself. You'll need to remove the climate control unit and check these out - quite a job by the way. Are you mechanically talented:D

Thanks very much for the reply. Is the only way to remove the switch by removing the instrument panel first?
If that's the case I will need to get very familiar with my instruction manual.

I think you don't need to remove the instrument cluster, but you will need to start getting into the wood-grained trim in that area (not sure how exactly - sorry).

Yes, you need to remove the instrument panel surround.

Pull out the parking light switch and mirror switch. Undo the nut accessible from the mirror switch opening and pull of the suede panel under the steering column. May also have to remove the metal panel underneath to get to the rear defrost switch etc connections.

Pop out the rear defrost and fog light switches and remove

Undo the screws top and bottom and remove the instrument cluster surround.

Undo the two screws and remove the center vent.

Remove the screws holding the climate control unit.

There are also a couple of small screws underneath the climate control unit which are accessible from the audio opening.

Remove the climate control unit.

Thank you to everyone who responded. The plan is to keep jamming the switch with bits of paper until the waether gets warmer then dismantle the dash to get to the switches.
