adjusting brake band - dealer told me
 

A few months ago I asked about a slipping trans. a user here suggested maybe adjusting the brake band. Put the car on ramps today and realized it is more than I can handle (after reading a script on how to do it). I just called a dealer and service tech told me that they don't adjust the brake band to correct a slipping SVX transmission. They do that after the trans is rebuilt. Can anybody tell me the real deal? If my transmission is slipping (I believe between 3 and 4) is it possible that a brake band adjustment can cure the slippping? How is it determined that a trans needs rebuilt? Thanks as always.

Usually when the transmission has a flair between 3rd and 4th, or 2nd and 3rd, it means that your transmission is on its way out. Some have adjusted the bands, but only when it just starts. I am sure someone else will speak up here and correct my statement if I am wrong and give you more details. Good luck. :)

ya that's a brake band. it's probably shot and not just needing adjustment but adjusting it may keep you on the road a little longer. You should also check your tps sensor and make sure it's adjusted right so you aren't getting low line pressure.

it should also be kept in mind that tighting a worn brake band even if it does keep you on the road will lead to damage to the reverse drum. It's also very likely the high clutch isn't far behind but as long as your acceleration in 3rd is good it doesn't sound like it's shot yet so like i was saying..it's possible in your case that a brake band adjustment will keep you on the road a while longer but at the same time yes your transmission is on the way out.

S**t oh well. It seems as though if I just drive it "normally" I can feel it slip a bit (not terrible but it is slipping) but if I more or less mash on it, seems like it almost doesn't slip at all. Just womdering if something is speed related. Either way it sound slike I'm a goner or the tranny is I should say. Thanks

could possibly be your throttle position sensor is off so you'll want to look into that either way even with a new transmission that will need to be right.

talked to a guy up the street, gas station owner that does mech work too. He said take a gamble and flush the trans first and see if there's a difference...Also said forget a rebuild get a new trans. Any thoughts..on either point?

a flush won't do anything. I don't believe new transmissions are available. Subaru offers remans which come with a one year warranty but have the same weaknesses as always (slow shifts, weak high clutch, band slips too much). I build transmissions that shift fast, have higher apply pressures to prevent high clutch and brake band slippage, have a stronger high clutch as well as a couple others, and better friction materials all around. You should ask svxfiles about it. He just installed one of them for one of my customers. I believe he's conveniently close to you. You could have him install one for you too. It will not only last you longer than anything else you can get--it's the single biggest improvement you can make towards making the car more fun to drive.

#1. DO NOT POWER FLUSH YOUR TRANSMISSION!
To drain and refill it is fine.

#2. You are not that far from me if you would like to get your band adjusted, TPS adjusted and trans checked out on a factory Subaru Select Monitor.
(At the least disconnect the dropping resistor located between the battery and the inner fender.)

#3. A professionally rebuilt transmission done by an expert is actually better than a new factory transmission.

#4. Currently the only Subaru transmission expert that is building transmissions for us SVX addicts is LAN anECUTune down in Florida.



I just installed one of his rebuilt transmissions a few weeks back, and the shifts were firm, quick and very positive!

what is wrong with flushing it? I had the fluid flushed on my first svx and it fixed the rear axle binding.

When I worked at the local Subaru dealership the "power flush" was pushed heavily.
At the time it was about $100.00 for the flush.
Mechanics would hook the car up to the machine, add the 110psi airline, blow the accumulated sludge out of the transmission, and two weeks later fuly 1/2 of the people had transmission failure!

The simple dealers answer was that your trans was ALREADY going out.

I hear you but you still didn't explain why the flush is a bad thing.
