Speedo Doesnt work

Car: 1992 SVX LSL

Problem: Speedometer does not work. Just sits at 0.

What could cause the problem?

thanks :D :D

Absence of motion is the main cause of this particular problem.

(Don't say you didn't expect that answer from this crowd -- sorry it had to be me. Ah, heck. No I'm not. :D )

But seriously . . .

I'll take a gander at the manuals. Meanwhile, you can take a gander at the schematic:

Re: Speedo Doesnt work

Assuming that the car WAS moving (addressing Randy's technicality... yeeesh... :D):

Try to retrieve the transmission codes from the car. My first guess would be one of the vehicle speed sensors are shot, or the speedo cable/gear is busted. If you are getting 16 blinks on the power light when you start the car, that means there's a code stored.

Apparently, if there is no code, it's mechanical, which DOES mean the speedo drive or driven gear. Follow the speedo cable to the top of the tranny (actually it's on the diff case) to find the shaft that holds the driven gear (as we discussed last night).

The speedometer broke on my 90 legacy a while back it turned out to be just a cable cost about $75 it also happened with my odometer so I pretty much drove the car 15k miles wihtout it working....so instead of the odometer reading 370,XXX it only reads 355,XXX but at that stage in the game whose to bother.

Is the speedo in the svx not electronic meaning no cable?

There is a cable, according to the service manual.

How about the friggin fuse? Had the same problem on previous car :)

It's been my experience that if a car has a cable there is no electrical portion at all. Are the speed sensors y'all are referring to the shaft sensors for the TCU that determines front/rear wheelspin?

Beav

p.s. If the cable just broke you can get a universal cable at any auto parts store for a few bucks. However if the cable housing was damaged it'll ruin the new cable and you'll have no choice but to replace both. Do ya feel lucky? ;)

This whole thing kinda has me confused (yeah, what's new, huh?). I had always been under the impression that the speedo was electronic, also. But, then, when I started checking the manuals, the electrical schematic shows a feed from Speed Sensor number two, but, in looking through the Transmission section, it shows a speedo cable and location of the drive/driven gears in the front diff (thus located for proper lubrication).

So, since they don't have a trouble shooting section specifically for the Speedo, I'll try to put the two together, unless, Beav, you have an answer without all my searching. :D

Just in case, that would be fuse #15

my speedo sux too

i am new to this site. i just got a 92 svx, pearl, with 98,000miles. it's in great shape. i think it is the touring edition(at least that is what an svx owner told me. my speedo, trip and odometer don't work. the mechanic told me that it wasn't a line or a fuse, the thing was just shot. i'm getting a new one put in soon-hopefully that would be the problem.

Beav 02-24-2002 09:48 PM

After looking at the manual I'm thinking the SVX speedo is electric. I'm also thinking the manual is a carryover from the Legacy and Impreza manuals, which use mechanical speedos. If the guys here that have pulled trannys and dashboards speak up I think we'll find that they've not seen a cable on an SVX. I've got a buck on my theory... ;)

The speedometer is electric. However, a cable may pass though the electric sending unit and run to the cruise control.

There is absolutly no cable running into the dash cluster.
