Looking for a new car for me

hey everyone I need some advice. I just went car shopping...my mom is going to assist me in paying for whatever car I decide to get. She came with me to the Subaru dealer in rockland. They had a 2003 Legacy GT there with 34k on the clock. This car was FULLY loaded...heated seats...leather...heated wipers...compass...auto dimming mirror...the whole deal. Only thing with this car is that it will need new tires in 10k miles and the rotors have to be resurfaced from what I can tell when i drove it. Price of this car is 14,886...if we put down 8k for it then we would have to pay around 260-270 for 36 months. Warranty for this car is only for another year or so and is only for the powertrain.

They told us they have an 06 Legacy there that someone just traded in. Its a silver 06 just like my moms car just that this one has a 5 spd :D . Reason the man traded it in is because he and his wife had a baby so he traded it in for an outback...so the salesman says anyway. This car has only 500 miles on it...and still has the factory bumper to bumper warranty. Putting 8k down this car would be 360-370 a month for 36 months. I got to test drive the Legacy 5 spd....I loved it of course. I am going to need a little practice driving stick though as Ive never owned a car with a manual transmission. So what do you all think? Personally I like the latter deal just because the car is brand new and has the good warranty with it.

are you really sure you want a stick shift? Don't you do a lot of driving in NYC or live in NYC? Personally I hate automatics but if I lived there I would seriously consider it.

Also, I'm not going to publically berate that dealer in Rockland but I was there once and left so pissed off that I wouldn't spend a nickle there if i didn't have to.

In the end though...I'd buy the newer one. ;)

The 06 used car could cost more than a new car because Subaru is offering 0 percent financing AND good cash rebates. A good way to buy a new car is to contact the internet salesperson through cars.com or edmunds and offer to pay dealer invoice. On the 03, offer them less money, ask for new tires, free alignment, new rotors/brakes, and an extended warranty with a zero deductible.

I would consider the new hybrid Honda Civic. It costs about 20, but you get 50 mpg and drive in the HOV lane with just the driver.

Well I've mastered the Subway system now so I won't be taking the car to manhattan so much anymore. Maybe once in a while when I hit the bars and clubs up over there and I dont feel like taking the train back home ( absolutley sober of course). Ive been dying for a stick shift for a while and definitley see how annoying it can be while in stop and go traffic. But the newer car would put my mind at ease...the 03 legacy was so nice though...i mean that car was fully loaded with anything you could ask for.

I also wasn't pleasant with the people at bill kolb subaru there in rockland...rye subaru is definitley the best dealership I have ever been too period.

aside from a little power loss in the torque converter (a reflash evens up the disparity), the Legacy's 5EAT is a far better tranny than the 4EAT was. the Prodrive-designed sportshift will shift faster than any manual, and you can leave it in auto for heavy traffic.

n00b, i'd get the '06 GT if you can manage it - its a lot more car than the '03 GT.

agreed! having owned both (a 2000 and a 2005), the only thing the same about the two cars is the name.

Yeah well the dealer called and said the 06 Legacy is no longer available as someone came in this morning to get it. So that probably means that he only told us about it yesterday to drive the price up on it so the other person that was interested bought it. Ah well to tell you the truth I was more interested in the 03 Legacy GT just because of everything it offered. I like the 06's but it was exactly the same as my moms car...I want something a little different.

Well obviously its different....the 06 is a turbocharged engine....the 03 is just a N/A Boxer 4 with 163 HP. I'm not really looking for the performance aspect as I am the driving comfort and long term reliability. I don't want a car that I'm going to have to take into the shop every 3 weeks. :)

What exactly does a reflash do? BTW the 06 Legacy he told us about yesterday wasn't a GT...it was a 2.5i special edition. Thats why I said its exactly like my moms car except with a manual transmission.

i thought yer mom had a 2.5i Limited.

i wonder what cars i'd now own if we would have been able to do the svx / impreza trade over two years ago.

The limited and special edition are identical...only difference is that the SE has a manual tranny. Engine is a n/a 178 HP boxer4. My moms is a limited....its an automatic with sportshift.

Nope...2.5i limited has cloth seats and they are not heated. The GT limited has all that good stuff.
