Code 56 - EGR System?
 

I've been having a check engine light come on and go off at random, but lately staying on for longer periods so finally checked codes. Came up with a code 56, which according to the list in the How-To's here is the EGR System.

Anyone had trouble with this before?

Are you getting any additonal codes? The EGR code 56 can be tripped by another problem. My code 56 came along with a code 21 (coolant sensor). Once the coolant sensor was replaced, the EGR problem was fixed. If you are just getting the code 56, then check the vacuum hoses to see if any came loose.

I've experienced this code during cold weather. It had something to do with the valve sticking a little when cold. CE light comes on briefly while the valve is stuck, then goes away as soon as it unsticks. Only happened twice, on really cold days, and never happend again.
