Bringing an SVX back to life

Finally aquired everything I think I'll need to make the race car purr again. She's sat for over a year with not much gas and no fuel filter so the system was open during that time. Question is how to restart it? Thinking about some dry gas and throw in some new gas to the tank (which will mean quite a few trips to the gas station as I only have a 1 gallon gas container). Anything else I may be missing?

Would like to use all the nice weather we've been having this week.:D

I would unplug the igniter at first, till the oil pressure built up. You did change the oil and filter, right?

Bob,

The car should start with a gallon of gas.

You should open the high pressure line just before the fuel filter.

Crank it over [with a well charged battery] till you get fuel spitting there. Would be good if you could take off and immerse the fuel filter in petrol till it fills, then re-connect it to the inlet pipe. Now crank it till you get gas at the outlet.

Re-connect the line to the injectors, and it should fire up after a few turns.

Obviously be careful of the fuel, have NOBODY smoking within 20 metres of the job. You don't want it to really fire up, now do you?:D

Not yet, that is first on the list once it warms up. Years of changing it cold in bikes has led me to the conclusion that it just doens't do a bit of good. Anything bad has alread suck to the bottom and won't be coming out with cold oil.

Trade-off

The trade way of dealing with the gunge you mention is to use diesel.

When you have drained off most of the oil from the sump, put in a few litres of diesel into the oil filler.

Then start up the engine, run it for a bit and the diesel will dissolve the crud you mention. When you drain it this time, all the gunge comes out with the diesel.

Now don't keep it running till it seizes, and don't rev to the red line or anything. Diesel has inbuilt lubrication, but not enough to prevent damage if you overdo it.

A gentle wash. Like for delicates.

Joe:)
