Steering Pump Reservior Leak on Top - How to fix

For about 5+ years, my power steering reservior leaked from what appeared to be around the cap/dipstick. From looking at photos of other SVXs, this seems to be a problem others have. Here is how I fixed it...
  • Go to Home Depot/Lowes and buy a small sheet of thin rubber. The one I got was red and about 6" square and about 1/8" thick (about $1).
  • take the power steering cap/dipstick off and measure the inside and outside diameter necessary to create a gasket out of the rubber.
  • Cut out the gasket. I used a compass to draw up the gasket on the rubber sheet and sharp scissors to cut it out.
  • Install the gasket onto the cap/dipstick. It should have to stretch a bit to get over the tabs that hold the cap/dipstick to the reservior.
  • Put the cap/dipstick back on the reservior. If you cut the gasket to the right size, you should never have to wipe ATF off of the top of the reservior again.

A very inexpensive fix, especially since the list cost on a new cap/dipstick is over $30.00.
