svx skips second gear?

Hi, I've been lurking for quite a while and reading up on the svx as I would like to get one. I ran across this one on craigslist http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/1249592319.html for very a very low price, but the ad says it "skips" second gear. I'm wondering what could cause this and if it means it needs a new transmission or if its something else.
My budget for buying one of these is 5-7k, but for the price this kid is asking and the low-ish mileage the car has, its hard not to wonder if its worth getting a cheap one and fixing it up.

At any rate I was wondering if anyone else had encountered the second gear thing and how involved it is to fix it. I'd prefer a pearly but this is close and looks pretty good (in the pics, haven't gone to see it yet.)

Yeah, it probably doesn't have 4th gear either, but you wouldn't know it because it won't try to shift into 4th as far as you can tell. If the brake band is gone, it will go right on by 2nd gear and run on 1 and 3 speeds only. Easy fix for the trans, a member of our community offers a rebuild that would cost you $1000

Is the brake band the deal with the external adjustment?

Well yes it is, but It sounds like that one is too late for that. A rebuild ,or swap is needed.

ok. well unless anyone has a nice pearly in better condition lying around I am going to go look at this thing then. I really wish I was around in time to get solar's in orlando

With the awd do i need a trailer to move the car or can I use a dolly?
or maybe I can just keep it at around 50mph or so and drive it home.

Trailer, unless you can get under it and remove the rear driveshaft. I wouldnt recommend driving it.

I might be too late, but you can drive it, if you use the shifter. Select 1st get it up to speed, then select 3rd. Miss 2nd completely. If you come to a stop, pull it back to 1st to start and then straight to 3rd. Don't use 2nd or 4th.

Harvey.
