Well, the SVX was nice and pretty for all of 3 months...

And then on the day before Christmas eve, my neighbor backed into it. Some of you may remember the thread I posted back in October showing off the new paint and body work I just spent a couple months doing myself.

Her insurance totaled it, but I'm of course keeping it so they said they would deduct salvage value (which is yet to be determined) from NADA value of $3300. Not the worst thing in the world, but I'm really not looking forward to fixing it.

Anyone in Colorado have a rear bumper and quarter panel for cheap?

Aren't rear qtr panels like $400 new and the bumper doesn't look too bad, you could get a bumper cover for it maybe?

That's a real heartbreaker for sure.
How can they call that amount of damage totalled?

Sorry to hear that. I remember watching your thread as you repaired the rear quarter...I was very impressed with how clean the work was. Im sure with your skill you can make it look as though it never happened.

i think the isurance companies now just look at the year of the car, if its older than 2000 its considered totaled no matter what, i think its to work in conjunction of getting older cars off the road so they can cycle in new cars from the factory which will "stimulate the economy" and help out the auto companies.
If you think about it. its enthusiats like us and mechanical inclined people who keep older cars running helped with the car company's financial crisis in some form.

Its because of this and the stupid clunkers program soo many svxii have been lost

My insurance company told me there was some law (or whatever) that was in place if that any car over 7 years of age has (what they consider) 75% of damage, it is automatic a total loss... totaled.

For the same damage, most places look at around $1,800 - $2,200 for fixing this and the bumper, with the piece, time/labor and paint involved... it adds up quickly. It's not exactly fair by any means.

Totaling should not be based on value as you are insuring your car for 100% but as to whether or not the car can be fixed drivable again, which in most cases, it is. (Especially in cases like this).

We, the consumer... always get screwed.

Insurance called me today, told me salvage value is $900. So they deduct that from the $3300 retail and send me a check for $2400.

It still kills me everytime I see/drive it

I know here in WV if a car is totaled by the insurance, even if you buy it back you can never put it back on the road. They no longer will license a salvage title or rebuilt title. You may want to check in your area. That sucks because $1000 damage would probably total an svx. I wouldnt even turn mine into insurance if it was fixable. Here in WV anyways.

Back in the late 90's I had a Scirocco 16v that was in a light bump and rub and the insurance company wanted to total the car. I wrote them a lower estimate to do the work myself and prevented them from giving me a salvage certificate. Just last year I had to do the same thing to save my 92 SVX from a similar fate.

Insurance companies should be brought up on racketeering charges. You pay every 6 months religiously and when you need them to come through for you they have all these crazy laws that let them rip you off. Over the course of my adult life I have easily paid 20 times more in premiums than I have collected in payments and when I talk to an insurance adjuster, they always treat me like a criminal. I wish I could afford a squadron of lobbyists to push laws through congress to protect my interests.

Colorado doesn't issue salvage titles after a certain year of vehicle, which must be earlier than '95 as the insurance lady told me my title would be fine. So no worries about that.
