got a surprise today from a dealership

hi everyone,

i was finally annoyed with my abs light and so i took it into the dealership this morning. They called before i even got home from the dealership. they said that it was the rear abs unit that was reason for the light and i knew that it was from a wheel bearing another dealership done about a month ago. They also said that my front and rear rotors were shot and the pads were also shot. I had the front changed, the calipers and rotors and pads done last july and i took the car off the road this last winter. So i havent even put 6k on the car since it was done. The service guy said in order to completly fix the brake problem i would need to get this all done. I asked how much and he qutoed my $1300. I almost dropped the phone, the breakdown was new rotors in the front with pads installed 500 buxs and the same for the rear and 300 installed for the abs in the back. I told him just to do the abs cause that was my only concern. I just needed a place to vent my anger, why do all the dealerships i deal with have to screw my balls to the wall. oh well. i am only paying the 300. I know the front are fine but i will check the rear pads when i get the car back tomorrow.
Thanks for listening guys and gals

Since you didn't have the other dealer correct the prolem when you got the car back you're going to have to grin and bear it now. At $114 for a sensor that has no reason to be more than $20 (and that's a stretch, considering how simple a device it is) I'm glad I took my time and worked Randy's loose instead of shredding it when I changed his bearing.

I'm just curious as to why you felt it necessary to take it to a dealer in the first place. The first dealer proved that their mechanic(s) are no better than a poor mechanic anywhere else. There's really nothing mystical about the car and nothing that can't be repaired by any good mechanic.

I've had some bad expierances at private shops and I, honestly, dont trust anyone else to touch my car. I'm sure theres some good qualified mechanics out there, but it seems to me that the ones in my area are workin at the subie dealer. :) ;)

If you're mechanically inclined, grab one off a wreck and install it yourself.

Considering the old one's shot anyways, all it takes is to remove the wheel, calipers, and rotors, and hammer the sucker out. Then just follow the wire and remove the bolts along the wire to the beneath the rear seat.

Took me about less than 1 hour even with a semi-stripped bolt. :)

This thread illustrates something that I see quite often. Namely, one brings his SVX in for some service and it's either good or very very bad. All service is expensiveso that should not be a barometer. On this site, there is a section devoted to service shops. I went there the other day and saw that it was not being kept up much any more. Please, please please, if you have good or bad service experience at a dealership or an independent mechanic, take the time to enter it into the "Good, the Bad & the Ugly "shop section. That is the only way that we can build up a data base on decent shops across SVXland. Even people who are not in North America should post their experiences here. Afterall, the title of this does say WORLD network.
Don't let this section languish. Someday you may need it.
BTW: It's called, "SVX Shop Search".
