Re: Extra fog lights

What you're doing may not be legal onroad FYI. You are only legal to have 4 forward facing lights on at one time.

WOW Nate - that's is a bit rough, here in NZ there is no limit - I had 6 on my mini (2 + 4 spots).......

You could take a wire from the hi-beam side of headlights to a relay sense side, then hi-current from battery to relay & earth to the low side of relay - this setup will work with normal hi-beam stalk switch.

If you want to also fit a manual (hidden switch) then fit it into the initial line that runs from Hi-beam to relay line.

How would you wire the extra lights if I want to use the parking light switch on the lower dash next to the control for the mirror heater. Then they would be independent of stock fog lights.

Re: Extra fog lights

We did not get the fog lights as an option here in NZ - there is a blanking metal plate inside the housing - thought about retro-fitting them into the original housing (even got lamps from USA model sent out here - maybe one day) - but prefer to keep my NZ housing as it has glass not plastic out front..

Jvan:
What ever you want to control the light you would hook to the sense side of the realy.. What you are doing is using the power from one sorce such as the low beam bulb wire to throw a switch (in this case the relay that can take the big load ) and turn on the fog lights. The rely is a electronic magnet with contacts. When it gets a small voltage/ low amp signal to the magnet it energizes the magnet that draws the contacts together that are connected to a larger load and passes the high current to the lights. Not using a relay will fry the switch.
