Jump-starting

Okay, this might seem a REALLY dumb question, but what's the correct procedure for jump-starting a car? I was always told;

1. Connect + wire to the + terminal on the "working" car
2. Connect + wire to the + terminal on the "dead" car
3. Connect - wire to the - terminal on the "working" car
4. Connect - wire to a piece of bare metal in the engine compartment of the "dead" car.

I ask because everybody seems to have a different opinion on this... the procedure I list was taught to me years ago and I've never forgotten it... and it works... but I just want to make sure I'm doing it right so I don't cause damage to anyone's batteries... not least of which are my own :)

Thumper, you were taught well. This IS the correct procedure. The piece of "bare metal" I usually use, is the engine pull hook, attached to the motor. Otherwise (since I don't recall one on the svx) any bracket will do. Luckily, I haven't had to jump mine yet.

I am also more liable to use the "dangerous" method of attaching to the negative post of the dead battery. It ain't the best practice, but, I've never blown a battery or burnt anyone's alternator up, yet. :D
