replacement rear speakers
 

I just want to replace the rear speakers because one is damaged. Is there any negative to replacing a woofer with a co-ax? It seems like there are more choices of pure woofers when the size is 6 1/2 instead of 6x9. Do 6 1/2's fit without any cutting?
What about nominal 4 ohm vs 8 ohm?

I recommend you keep the 6x9's. Look at some Infinity Kappa's. Very nice speaker, not too much cash. They come with a crossover so you will have to keep the 14g(?) wire that runs to them.

If you do want to go with 6 1/2's I believe you should be able to find some adapter's or you could just fab your own pretty easily with some MDF.

And lastly, you can run a 4ohm speaker off of an 8ohm output signal, but not the other way around. It is best practice to match them, though.

Sticking with 6x9's is fine with me. I just don't know if existing overall balance will be enhanced or degraded with the addition of a tweeter back there.
So will the co-ax go as deep or deeper than the stock woofers? I assume so as replacements are probably of a higher quality than stock.

The tweeter can be disconnected if you like, it is simple to remove the connectors from the back of the speaker (I actually soldered mine because one was falling off). I really enjoy the way mine sound, and am adding 6 1/2 Infinity Kappa Perfects (with the dash tweeters) because now my front speakers don't sound good to me at all. I have them powered with a 100x4 Eclipse Amp.

I am not sure what you mean by "will the co-ax be deeper?"

Yes, balance will be affected. It would be unless you got identical speakers so I would always replace them in pairs. Fit is always a concern so you have to consider that as well. Coax will be better.

By "co-ax deeper" I meant that will the low end frequency response by lower for the stock woofer or a co-ax.

I think you got this backwards, and just about everything car audio is 4ohm. If you have a 4ohm head unit output and you run two 4ohm speakers off one lead, essentially making it a 2ohm speaker, it overloads the powerstage unless it is specifically made to be 2ohm stable. Less ohms means more draw from the headunit to push the driver.

I have Sony Xplod 6x9 3-ways in back and they sound great. I have always been a fan of the sound quality of 3-way speakers all around.

So if you put 3 way's in the back, what did you do to bypass the factory crossover?
or maybe I should also ask where is the factory crossover?
or did you use your own wiring from the head unit to the back?

There is none for the back, the stock speakers were full-range. The only crossover was for the tweeters from what I understand. My rears have crisp highs so im sure there is no low-pass crossover.

full range and not woofers?? well that explains everything!

Thanks for the correction So-Cal. I indeed had it backwards. My 6x9's sound excellent across the entire frequency range but are a bit low-mid heavy. I put the infinity crossover in and ran good quality (monster) rca's from my source unit. They sound great. My amp also has a crossover on it that I use to control frequencies a little more. Then again I am anal retention with my audio stuff.

Um, now that you said mid heaviness, I will peruse Boston Acoustics, MB Quart and Alpine instead.
