Just had my car serviced, and put on two front s/h disks from a low mileage crashed SVX, about 38k miles from memory. My car now has about 87K miles on, and my own disks were not too bad but developed a shimmy at motorway speeds especially after heating up.

The s/h ones were not worn very much, and I had them lightly skimmed before fitting. They were extraordinarily bad on the car, would not surprise me if they contributed to the accident and writeoff.

However, on advice from Beav, who is ever knowledgeable and helpful, I had the garage take them off again, and clean the hub and the bell housing behind the mounting face, where the disk aligns with the hub. Major major difference. The car has now no shake or judder at slow traffic speeds. There is still a bad shake at motorway speeds, and the left one is the culprit. I will be having the disks shaved on the car this week to rectify.

Anyway, the point is, if you have to have your disks off for any reason, make sure the mechanic does two things; first note exactly how they were oriented, and put them back exactly the same and on the same wheels. Secondly, be aware that any dirt or rust flakes that get between the back of the disk and the front flange of the hub will cause serious shimmy, or run-out as our US friends call it. Even putting on new disks, it would be wise to go for Operating Theatre cleanliness standards.

They look pretty good.

I have seen posts on the US site about replacement disks.[Or rotors as they like to call them]

From memory, some have said don't get the drilled ones, they warp quicker. Others say the grooved ones cause a howl or whine as the edge of the groove passes the pads.

My choice would be a 10-groove, no drilling.

Is this price, £124, for one disk or two?

I have a friend with a Porche, fitted with drilled and grooved. After about 20k miles, he says that he has had no noise from them at all.

I believe that the prices quoted are per pair.
