...I would have expected more from Automobile mag...

Last months automobile mag missed me off. Towards the back, in the "sold" section, there ws a 96 SVX LSi that sold for, I think, 7k. Okay. But then there was a negative commentary about how Subaru did the car wrong, and it will never be worth more than that. Screw them...i'll bet that Subaru will be bigger and better overall than all the imports (and domestics, who are all basically dead) in a few years, and the SVX will be a huge collectors item soon after because Subaru's best ideas went into such a unique, intoxicating design. So Baaaaaah to them

i think i'd have to agree with them - Subaru DID do the SVX wrong by killing it off and not addressing the tranny, rotor, and bearing issues, no? they could have developed it even further by slapping a turbo in, too, but they just gave up on it.

in reality, there aren't any signs of it becoming a huge collectors item (except in Earl's driveway :D )

Marketing issue. (In my humble opinion)

The year is 1992

Sunaru's known slogan: 'Inexpensive and built to stay that way'

Subaru Salesman request. 'Gimme $30,000'

ooops

I say BAHHH...who the hell cares what Automobile mag says anyway? I used to subscribe to it - finally cancelled after I'd had my fill of D.E.Davis' self absorbtion.
I do agree that the SVX probably won't be a huge collector's item though. Hell, no one knows what it is besides us! And, it doesn't really fit into any collector category that's been established.
Actually I hope it doesn't - I want to keep the prices WAY down for me! ;)

Automobile if EFFED UP!!!!! What the hell are they talking about!!!! The SVX is one of the best cars ever made!!!! I still get compliments and people asking me if it's a 2003 model or something!!!! Subaru really screwed up when they didn't advertize it back in 1992... That's where they shot themselves in the foot...

what did Automobile say that was so horrible? that a '96 SVX wouldn't be worth much more than around $9000? there are quite a few recent posts on this site with people whining about how $14,000 is an absurd amout to pay for a '97 SVX.

would everyone feel better if they had to shell out $20,000 for their SVX? i'm glad they're cheap and no one knows what the hell they are.

Me too, but I don't appreciate generally negative comments on a great car that they themselves referred to in 1991 as "the poor mans Porsche Carerra 4"..."accelerates with the kind of thrust people usually equate from a big V8"..."smoother than the Lexus LS400"..."best of the new crop of grand sport tourers"..."steering almost as brilliant as a Porsche carerra 2's" (ie better than carerra 4...different rack for AWD model)...etc...Seems if sales were successful, their current opinions on these cars would vary. It just annoys me. I've test driven while helping my aunt shop for a new AWD car under $40k virtually every car available in that range, and nothing could touch the SVXs overall drivablilty balance. Thats what I think it is with the SVX...balance. Not overly pulled in any one direction, which usually makes cars boring, but you can tell tons of passion went into creating this beast.

i paid 20 large for my svx. :(

GreenMarine 01-17-2004 08:21 PM

Damn, I paid half that.... Then again mine is two years older than yours and has nearly 80,000 miles more than yours on it... :D:D:D But still, it has never given me any heartburn like my other cars that I've owned...

I have to disagree about the collectors bit...
my previous car (which I still love them) was a Merkur Scorpio
They were different for the times and had options galore for the time that they came out...sound familiar?

Now Merkurs are collectors with a following...my basis of being a collector is there is a following for the car...
The SVX has that now.

Look at MG's same thing...

When I was in school after hearing about this car I had to go sown to the Suby dealer and see one. I fell in love but never thought I would own one...The salesmen were like yeah its nice but they wern't excited about the car to insite sales...IMHO.

Who cares what they sell for...makes them easier to obtain...for now.

Cars that stand out in the test of time as being "one of a kind" always endure in the hearts of those that love them and the public shall remember them in a light that is just a little brighter than just being a....car.

;)

I think it will be worth money someday. But if not, no big deal. The car get's attention and that's what makes it collectable to me. I'd love to retire Mandi's X someday, tear it down and rebuild it all like new. Then take it to shows. Guarantee the car would win awards. I would have no interest in selling it anyway, so what does it matter how much it's worth?

Exactly how I feel...I just feel the mag should have given it some more positive attention and not been so blah about it.

And considering some mags "used car" advice and surveys in some issues, I think the SVX would be a great candidate. Just give it some more attention...I think the SVX is the best car FHI ever put out, and should be acknowledged as so.

SVX Car of the yr.

FYI. In 1992 the SVX won new car of the yr. in 2 catagories from
a Canadian (at the time) program called Drivers Seat w/ Tony Whitney & Ted Laturnus. They loved the SVX ie. Tony said he would like to see a 5 spd. to get the best out of that jewel of an engine. He liked the windows and the suede trim and hoped that Subaru wins the attention it deserves with this car. He said it handles and rides like the best in it's class. Ted did n
ot like the windows but concluded ; I have to give the SVX top marks in just about every dept. This is a thoroughly designed automobile.
$37- $38,000. canadian for the SVX LSI:cool:
