Dumpster Day!!
I spent 7 1/2 hours yesterday as the 'keeper of the dumpsters'! (Roll-offs) I was to watch what went in, see to it that metal didn't land there, and, in general, oversee that end of the operation.
We set up a place where 'gently used' stuff could be placed, to be 'claimed' by anyone that wanted it. If it was something that I wanted, it went on MY truck! (No, I didn't haul more home than I hauled over). I gathered old people stuff, toys and clean metal for my welding shop. I also 'claimed' a 5 hp Sears boat motor that turned over and the prop turned. I had a dump truck for the scrap, a pick-up for the aluminum and a pick-up for my 'hoardings'! We also had 2 trucks with a lot of battery operated tools to 'reduce' the size of big things. I also had a 16# sledge hammer to reduce furniture. We filled, (overfilled actually) (2) 8' high cans and (2) 6' high cans with trash. We 're-directed' a dump truck load of scrap metal, 1/2 pick-up load of aluminum, a pick-up load of mowers and related internal combustion stuff, and 2 pick-up loads of 'gently used' stuff that will not be in the landfill tomorrow. It was a busy, fun day! |
Re: Dumpster Day!!
Between the 'gently used' part and the scrap drive, we saved 1/2 a dumpsters worth of stuff that we would have to pay to dump.
The scrap money will be put back into the coffers to help finance the next dumpster day. |

I live in the Socialist Republic of Alachua (County) but, to give them credit, one of the best recycling programs in the country. I am also a big fan of freecycle.com. As little to waste as possible. It's sad how many people are depending on scrap sales these days.
