Cleaning the 93. Warning: Not for the weak stomach.

As some of you may know, as I had posted another thread, I recently purchased a 1993 Anniversary Edition for a personal project. After replacing the trans over the weekend with Tom's assistance, I decided to take the car to work, as I have all day free. (long story)

Today I spent time cleaning out the contents of the interior, among other things. I don't think words can describe it, so Ill let the photos do the talking.

First, the problem with the trans.

I don't know how some people can let their cars get this bad!

At that point, there was no way I was saving that carpet, so out it went.

Peeling off crappy purple tint:

Revealed rust after removing cheap chrome wheel arches:

Looking rough:

Looking somewhat less rough?

Now that the carpet is gone, all of the plastic trim pieces are soaking in a car wash solution to loosen the grime.

Out of all of this, it is hard to believe, but the car actually drives fairly well. Before it was parked due to a differential failure, the car received new BFGoodrich Tires, pads and rotors, and front axles. However, the car sat for over two years so even those items show some age, but there are no trouble codes, bearing noises, or anything else other than this cosmetic/unsanitary mess.

I'm making a list of the items I need, but I know for sure I will need two front door panels, carpet tub, rear seat bottom, driver seat, shifter surround woodgrain and the PS dash suede.

I didn't expect to start this project this soon, but I suppose I cant seem to get enough when it comes to these cars...:o

I have high expectations for this car, as in, I know it will get much better, after seeing what just a couple hours today did. (The odor is mostly gone!:barf:)

Looks good so far Mike. That rust is it just surface etched or did it rot through?

Its mostly surface. There may be pinholes but it didn't feel that thin from a cursory examination. It's on my list, along with the 87,000 dings .

Oh, and a quick one of it with the bowling shoe:

Reminds me of the hard cleaning I've done to my FWD SVX....though not nearly as bad. I wish I had taken before and after pictures. Great job and goodluck finishing this project.

Man you do some great work! Good job, can't wait to see what it will look like when it is done.

You probably could have saved the carpet, you should see some of the minivans we get in on trade at my work :barf::barf::barf:, we have a kerosene fired steam extractor, works wonders, even on nasty nasty soccer mom vans (Which are way worse than that car, trust me, I WORK on cars that are worse than that...), and for the back seat, you might be able to clean it off with some good cleaner, and then use some leather conditioner on it, unless it's torn or something.

Looks pretty good though, keep us posted :)

You need to swap front driver fenders with the bowling shoe!

Mike, you are doing a great job on that one. I know that it will shine when you are done with it. It is hard to believe that people let their cars get that way. :(

Looking at these pictures, I'm thinkin' it would be pretty useful to accumulate a bunch of shots of SVXi that are disassembled, even if it's just interior stuff. They'd make it easy to show where different pieces are located... I'd like to have known that the ABS computer was where it is before I went digging for it, or the security module (which I took some good pictures of when I found it!)

Ew... That's about all I can say...

I would tend to agree. However, I've pulled interiors out of svxs so many times so I suppose I take it for granted. The carpet is still out. Any helpful photos I should take of an area in particular?
