5spd chatter
so as some as you may have read, i have done the 5spd swap with a 99 impreza trans and am having problems.
re-cap: the car can move and hit highway speeds, it shifts fine in all gears, and i replaced the clutch and pressuree plate with a ACT kit that can handle 308ftlbs of torqe. problem: it could seem that the clutch slips howver i dont smell clutch after driving (troubleshooting) around for about an hour or so. 3-5 work almost flawlessly, but first and second are real sluggish. rpms shoot up and speed does nothing for awhile. tryin to hop in traffic wouldnt work well untill i get to 3rd lol i took the clutch out to ensure it wasnt put in backwards and after veryifyin that, i adjusted and readjusted the clutch cable and the car does the same thing for the most part. when stepping on the gas in every gear (letting all ponies and torque loose) there seems to be a litte slippage in 3rd -5th and little of "chatter" from the tranny and alot of both in 1st and 2nd....any ideas? viscous coupler? thanks in advance |

You didn't verify my first thought about the mis-matched rear diff..... Next thought would be a bad center diff... |
Re: 5spd chatter
hcuk369, the diff came from the same car so it cant be mismatched...how do you chekc the center?
|
Re: 5spd chatter
I don't know a good way to check it.....but it can be replaced with the tranny still in the car....

Re: 5spd chatter
still stumped....i havent taken out the center diff (VC) to see if its work or broken...yet i still cant find a real good answer to my question.

Re: 5spd chatter
Did you get the flywheel turned? Everytime you put in a new clutch you have to get the flywheel turned or it will chatter and jump upon acceleration. That sounds like to me what has happened. i had to take my tranny back out after my first clutch job when i was young and get the flywheel turned and then it was perfect. You have to turn the flywheel so that the new clutch will mate to it. If it wasnt turned it is mated to the old clutch where it was burned in. Mated isnt really the right word but the clutch will burn in and when putting in a new clutch, all the old material and grooves have to be taken off the flywheel to make it smooth again.

Re: 5spd chatter
Might have to give it a whirl... I can't figure it out and the vc I will take out too. I might just scrap the car cause whoever had it before me did some hack job to get the 5sp in. If trans is good I might keep it tho
