Will a Forester tranmission do?

Hi all,

It's been a while, but you know what they say: no news is good news. Unfortunately you hear of me now, and so that means bad news. The transmission I had "rebuilt" 2 years/20000 miles ago failed. I find it very supsicious (other than the fact it didn't last) because what failed me this time is the same problem I had when I first had it rebuit. I say rebuilt here, but truth is it never really was. When the SVX came in, it wouldn't shift in 3rd (thus 4th and OD); I paid 2600$CAD (about 2000US) for what I thought was a rebuild. I found out yesterday that they only replaced what they felt had to be replaced (whatever is defective at that time, no prevention or "while where there, we might as well change this and that"). So 2 years later, I got the same problem: 3rd is gone again.

I'm kind of considering the 5spd swap at this point. I found a Forester transmission and I was wondering if it would fit and if the ratio was compatible. Also I will keep searching thru the tech section for the swap procedure and what else is needed to complete it, but if any of you would like to point out a thread in particular that you feel has it all, let me know.

And merry christmas to all of you!!!

Search and ye shall find

much info re: manual swaps. Have fun!

However, THE ONLY manual transmission which can be used without swapping the rear differential ratio is the USDM WRX (not STi) 5 speed. ALL OTHERS require a rear diff swap.

A brief list of what you need is:
Trans
Rear diff (see above)
pedals
clutch assembly (clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, pliot bushing)
flywheel
starter
shifter assembly
driveshaft
clutch cable OR hydraulic system depending on the trans used
shifter knob and boot
