Differential gone

Is it practical to rebuild a front differential? My transmisson was rebuilt thirty thousand miles ago but now the differential is gone. ('92 with 130,000 miles).

In calling around the only option seems to be a complete transmission rebuild. Is that the best way to go? It always shifted fine but suddenly started making a grinding noise from the front, and on the way to the repair shop the next day it made a loud bang clunk clunk clunk. It was towed the final 1/4 mile to the shop. My local guy isn't a tranny expert.

How huge of a repair bill am I looking at?

To fix or part out that is the question.

Thanks,
Rock

sounds like you blew the diff. I did this and it does not require a complete rebuild just the diff need to be replaced. first off, check to see is the diff case is cracked or broken. The you need to see if you can salvage the carrier(thing that the ring gear bolts onto) then buy a new matching ring and pinion with all new bearings. Also, while you have it out replace the axles seals on the trans. If you need any help or still have questions just keep me posted.

You live in pittsburgh. This area has some of the best svx shops in the country. Kerven Subaru and Harry's Auto Center in Butler specialize in SVX's. Harry's specializes in unusual transmission issues and 5 speed swaps. I would highly recommend having the car towed there.

Thanks. I already called Kerven Sub. and they said they don't rebuild differentials. I'll give Harry a call.
A 5 speed would be nice.
