another tranny thing. just wondering.

drivin around today, playin with the shifter.
i had it in third uphill and as i hit the apex and leveled out the TC locked up.
is it allowed to do that in 3rd or were the conditions right and the gear doesnt matter?

also, i got a nice crack in my bumper and i can see inside. its just kinda ugly. where can i get a new bumper for cheap (if i decide its that important to replace)?
i know some places to look i just want opinions.

Anyone?
*bump*

Earthworm 01-09-2004 06:50 PM

TC ONLY locks in 4th gear and never with any significant acceleration.

NikFu S. 01-09-2004 06:52 PM

so either i was imagining things or there is something wrong.

Earthworm 01-09-2004 07:19 PM

I'm betting you were just shifting 2-3

NikFu S. 01-10-2004 01:28 AM

no way dood.

i hit 3 before hitting the top of the hill. i know this because i was manually upshifting. after hitting the top and leveling out the rpms dropped and felt like it shifted even though it was still in 3.
rpms were under 3200.

could have been anything though.

Earthworm 01-10-2004 03:44 PM

how fast were you going?

NikFu S. 01-13-2004 12:52 PM

about 40 or so.

Earthworm 01-13-2004 10:00 PM

Anyone else want to answer this one?

OK, I failed Aircare, so I added MethylHydrate and since I have very little freeway driving available here I've been driving in 2nd gear all around town. in 2nd, at 3500 rpms I'm doing about 45. so if you say the rpms dropped to about 3200 @40mph, then I would guess you were in 1st.

Also, as for TC lockup in 3rd, I recall that this was allowed, but only when you select 3rd, as the trany would obviously shift to 4th before a TC lockup. So based on a bunch of guesses, when you leveled out you obviously let off on the gas, and perhaps the TC did lockup in 3rd, IF my rumour is correct. Oh, and I can confirm that TC lockup only happens if you are doing at least 50mph(+/-3mph)

Were you going over 50? I'll guess yes.

If all these are a yes, then things are good, except your bumber

NikFu S. 01-14-2004 01:26 AM

i dunno what a bumber is but yeah everything you said is correct.
amazing. remember though i was going uphill so i had higher rpms to cruise speed.
right on though, you rule today.

edit: oh you meant bumper. right-o.
im going to let it be.

Earthworm 01-14-2004 06:29 PM

I'm still not convinced that the T/C will lock up in 3rd. I've never seen it happen.

NikFu S. 01-15-2004 03:54 AM

i had it in drive today. wouldnt shift into 4th until i hit about 45. i checked the temp and it said -14 out. whhoooooo coldness.
i wonder if that has something to do with it.
actually i dont i just want to post how cold it was today.

LarryIII 01-15-2004 04:40 AM

Nikfu,

The tranny will stay in 3rd until The ATF reaches a temperature of about 55 deg. F.

Tranny has never locked the TC for me in anything but 4th gear, even tho the R&T book says it does to save gas in 2 and 3 also while it shuts down one of the cylinder banks to save gas. Also, that book claims that the RPM redline is 7k...hmm...I think Subaru changed everything for this car in the US.

No way at 40 you were pulling 3200 in 1st gear...at 44 MPH in 1st, its shifting into 2nd at 6600 RPM in my car. I'm guessing that you shifted into 3rd gear. Remember, even manually shifting, you're only blocking out the next gear. In 1, you're only in gear 1 until you hit the rev limiter. In 2, you go up to 2nd gear, but if you are accelerating hard, it will shift back into 1st gear. In 3, you go up to 3rd gear if speed permits (40 does permit this), but, as I said, if you're accelerating harder than normal, perhaps while going up a hill, it will downshift back to 2nd gear, until the computer decides to put it back into 3rd. I'm guessing you just felt the car upshift to 3rd.
