Subaru manuals

Hi everybody.

I am still waiting for my already bought yellowsub.
It is due here next week and I just can't wait...

Meanwhile can you help on where to get a factory service manual and a user manual both preferably in English?

I am sure my user manual will be in German which I am not that used to.

I tried local Sub representatives but they made a great story out of it because the car was never sold here and it would be tooooooo expensive to get it specifically for me.

Suggestions welcomed also on the best technical books although I would prefer the real thing i.e. Subaru originals.

Did you see my post about getting Australian manuals from Jamsvx?

This is the way to go.

PM me if you are unsure.

Yellowsub is here!

Hi Joe.

Sorry once again for the late answer.
Working all the time...:(

I just received IT!:D

Thank you also for the suggestion to contact Jamsvx to check about the English manuals.
I will be PM'ing him for that.
As predicted the User Manual is in German...

General impression

At first glance it does not have any big paint difference issues like the ones you noticed on the paint and that could be seen on the pics I posted before. One will only find it if knowing it and looking for it.

The hit from behind did not leave any scars. The German workshop people did a very good job.
They told me so over the phone but one never knows.

I could easily confirm what they told me about the previous owner: he really took good care for the car as it is easily confirmed by the interior of the car.

All the preventive maintenance was performed exactly on the predicted mileage and for example the hit was repaired fully from original parts, even the sheet metal ones (no unbending).

Overall I am more than pleased.

I am only considering a new painting job with white pearl (1000 Euro) but the quality of the current paint is so good that I think I will wait some time until I do so.

Only concern: exhaust.
The whole set is... brown.
You cannot see any particular deep rust point but nevertheless the phenomena is starting.
Any suggestion together with a... quotation?

Driving (short) impressions

Just after I received it I took a short ride on secondary roads because it does not have a plate yet.
Legalisation of imported cars is a pain here and so I will only do it after the end of July.
Just to make it short and for all you guys understand my passion: legalising the car will cost more than the car itself.

The engine started at first and shortly after there was a (hard) knocking sound that seemed like a valve needing lubrication/adjustment.
It was over by the time the test drive ended.

I did not really had the occasion to feel the road manners but it is a Subaru after all!

What really impressed me was the way the A/T shifted.

The first two times I started a run I felt the revs go up and stay there as if thre was no shifting but... the car was accelerating!:)

I tried it twice because my first immediate thought was: there goes another A/T to the garbage can (you know all the stories we ear around here).

It is definitely a very smooth gearbox.

The rest will come later as I did not have the time to do more.

Surprise

I knew the car would come with the 17" rims with half used Pirelli P7000 some of you saw in the pictures I posted.

I also knew that the original 16" "fan" wheels were included in the package but, surprise, they also had brand new Michelin Pilot tires on it and... there was another set of simple stamped sheet metal wheels, also 16" and also with another set of brand new Michelin ones.

Also there was a slightly damaged extra 17" rim with a new P7000 (probably from the back RH crash) and it was noticeable that the small spare was still brand new and all the accessories were there untouched which means, at least, the previous owner took good care.

I think I have tires/wheels for about 100000km.
I would just like to have the time and the luck with the car to allow me to use it.

I am anxious.

Congratulations my friend

From what you describe, you seem to have found a good one!:)

Forget about being anxious, enjoy your car. You searched hard, and you deserve it.

A couple of small bits of advice:

Regards the gearbox, many of them behave differently, so do not assume a problem till you are familiar with its habits. The car accelerating while the revs stay the same is totally normal, that is the torque converter working. It changes ratio to lower the gear in a particular range for acceleration. Nothing to worry about.

Second, the exhaust. This car of yours is fairly late, 96 maybe? Exhausts perforate from the inside, through condensate eating away the inner metal, short runs do a lot of harm here. You are seeing surface rust. This is caused from being in a cold climate and driving on salty roads. You should not worry too much about this either, the exhaust is made from heavy metal. Mine is still original, and my car is Dec '91. If you are genuinely worried about it, you could clean up the pipes and put a protective coat on them. By this I mean, put the car on a ramp, use sandpaper to buff off the surface rust. Then paint the exhaust with the special heat resistant paint you can get for painting manifolds. The rear silencer box is made from stainless steel, and the rust should come off with an abrasive polish. Relax, you don't have a problem here.

Your engine knock could potentially be more serious, but again, stay cool. The most likely cause is a sticking valve adjuster. The car has hydraulic valve lash adjustment which is self adjusting, sometimes they stick, but it can go away quickly. If it persisted, there is a procedure, Randy [aredubjay] has information on fixing this. Garage job I think.

Stick with the yellow if your respray job is as good as you say.:D

Let me know when and if you are ordering from Jamsvx. I could do with a set, and maybe Tony in England also, we could do a bulk order.

Good luck and best wishes,

Joe:) :)

Down under manuals

Hi Joe,

Thanks for all the support and sorry again for my long active absenses.

I sent a PM to James and he replied positively.

I am about to PM him on the quantities.

We're predictabily three so far: me, you and Tony.
There is another Member, John, from Devon, that could be interested and so I will include him in the predicted figures to James.

I the meantime I think it will be better for you and Tony (are you there?) to tell me the year of you cars as suggested by James.

I will ask him the predicted price for the items and for the dispatch to me for the given quantities.

I will also get prices for dispatch to any of you should I know dimensions and weight.

Andy 03-26-2003 01:25 PM

I would be very interested in a manual for a '92 if the price is right

tone 03-26-2003 01:34 PM

Ok Andy.

I'm putting you in the picture.

Manuals news

Hi.

I have news from Jamesvx.

I will update you later about specifics of costs for the manuals.
No time now.

However, just FYI, in order for you to give me the right info or intents the concept is as follows.

There is a base manual for 1992 and the manuals for all the other years are formed by the 1992 one and add-ons for each following year which I believe include the updates.

This means the latest years manuals are more expensive.

I personally would like to know what has been changed in the following years after the base 1992 model but this automatically decided for me since I own a 1996:D .

Please, whoever is thinking about ordering, send me the year info (unless you already did it).

See you.

Tone

Apologies my friend, I have only just noticed this post.

My car is a 92, actually December 91. However, I would be interested in a full set with all updates if the price is right. Can you post the price James is quoting?

Also, we need to contact Tony to see if he still wants one. I do remember him saying he was going to give himself one for Christmas:D :D

He just did not specify which Christmas.;)

Car going well I hope?

Joe:)

TonyShaleUK 04-27-2003 02:32 AM

Is there anybody there.....?

Still here guys - on and off. Really busy working abroad almost fulltime at the moment, so difficult to stay in touch. I'm still interested in a manual at the right price. I did mail my requirements, but like your's Joe mine is a 91 registration in Japan.

Anyone know of the whereabouts of a secondhand trannnie?? Mine is starting to be increasingly sharp in it's changing habits and hence will probably meet it's maker in the near future....

Andy 04-27-2003 02:44 AM

Could it be your resistor giving up. If it was the tranny, I would expect the symptoms to be the opposite.

svxistentialist 04-27-2003 11:23 AM

Tony,

Andy is right here, you may not have a terminal problem.

From what you say, you are experiencing shock when shifts are made. What shifts? On every gearchange, or only on a particular range?

Troubleshooting guide suggests the following possible causes:

Faulty control unit

Valve sticking

Faulty accumulator

Deterioration of ATF

Of which the valve and accumulators are in the sump, don't need the box taken out.

Also suggests checking over-running clutch, high clutch [for slippage] and for band and servo slippage. These last ones
are inside the tranny.

Try describing what is happening on the Technical forum, you get a lot of sensible answers from the guys.

Hope it is not too serious.

Joe

BTW, there is a specialist crew in Glasgow who do all Subaru trannies. They will rebuild yours for c.£1800 if memory serves me right. This is not a major expense relatively speaking, they know the boxes and will do a good job.

:) :D

TonyShaleUK 05-03-2003 12:59 AM

Thanks for initial feedback on the trannie. I checked the resistor several months ago after seeing various posts on the technical forum. From memory, it was sitting at about 32ohm. My knowledge of this in relation to what happens in the gearbox is zilch!!!

I'll put a description in the technical forum as you suggest Joe

Andy 05-03-2003 02:58 AM

Simple test Tony.

Try unplugging the resistor. If there is no change, it is probable faulty. If the changes are even harder, it is probably good.

(Replacements from the US are far cheaper than from your UK dealer.)
