Reusing Engine Block Bolts
 

OK, so I know you are supposed to use new head bolts when you rebuild an engine, but what about the similar looking bolts that hold the 2 halves of the block together. Are they the kind of bolts that stretch when you torque them?

I am reassembling my engine very soon so any other suggestions from experienced techs pertaining to engine reassembly would also be appreciated

I checked the manual and it doesn't say anything about replacing the bolts. The bolts are only tightened to 11 ft/lb then another 90deg then another 20 deg in sequence, so excessive stretching isn't an issue. Max torque range is 17-20 ft/lb. Most engines that need new head bolts require a final torque of 75 ft/lb or more.

Hi guys, I think when you do the 90 degree and 20 degree, that is when you are doing the stretching. Take care, BOBB

you've already got the damn thing apart, go for the few bucks for new bolts. Now is not the time to be stingy. Do RIGHT the first time so you won't have to do it a second time. Take it from someone who has been there with similar jobs. Second time around teardowns are a *****!

Yeah I guess its only $30 for the 12 main bolts that hold it together. Thats a lot cheaper than head bolts

How much are the stock head bolts? Just curious to know if it would be better to get a set of head studs/nuts.....which aren't cheap.

A set of head bolts are about $120 from subaruparts.com

DOH! Guess I coulda looked that up. A set of custom Grade 8 head studs with flange nuts is $235 + s/h.
