92 svx update with pics
I found a 92 svx, all wheel drive loaded car in the paper for $500. The front end has some damage. As far as I can tell, I will need to replace the hood, headlighs, and maybe a bumper. The very fronts of the front quater panles are kinked in. (first 4in) I think I can leave them alone for now and put a bra over it to cover it up. The car is rust free, great interior, 100,000 miles on it. I have loved this car my hole life, and now I have the chance to get one. Would this car be good buy? I heard things about the trannys going bad. Is this going to be a big expence for me if I get into fixing this car? What else should I look out for? Thank you:)

How is the engine and transmission???
Transmission is a weak point on this car along with the rear wheel bearings... $500 sounds like a good deal if the engine/tranny is good. Have you seen the car yet, take some pictures and post them |
Welcome to the site. Yes, that would be a good buy. The car may not be in the best shape, but you can give it some TLC and nurse it back into shape. If the engine is bad, or the tranny gone, it would be ok for a parts car as well. Good luck with the project. :)

The motor is in great shape. The car is in near mint condition. Ill snap some pics next time I go look at it.

If it is that good, I would buy it NOW. Don't wait or you may have it sold out from under you. Just my thought. Good luck :)

where is this car? darn, it's in ohio. i've just been been given permission to sell the impreza and buy one or two more SVXs.
|
don't wait. Buy it now. These cars are a dying breed and we SVXers are always happy to hear about the chance to snag one up. Don't let this car go to waste. if a car for 500 bucks can make a person happy, then do it, if not for just the experience.:D :D :D :D :D

Sorry.
$500 is a very good deal for a parts car or a fixer, but most 92 SVXs cost 3 to 4 thousand, and I don't think you can expect this one to run for long without investing that kind of money in it. They are wonderful, safe (aside from the temptation to drive like a maniac) cars, but they aren't cheap to fix and they aren't cheap to insure. Considering gas prices, they also aren't cheap to drive. :( |
My car insurance runs 800 bucks for 6 months on 2 cars (full coverage) - I am 26 though.
SVXes are a joy if they are taken care of by previous owner. If they are not, you are looking at a huge nightmare. My current SVX's big ticket items were my diff (thanks to me) and power steering leak from the line (80 bucks) and front axels and boots (600 bucks another thanks to me since it took me forever to get around to fixing the ps leak). If they are not taken care of, I recall spending over 10k on a SVX before and I have bills to prove it if needed (if I have not trash them already). Make SURE that someone who owns a SVX and who went through a tranny replacment procedure check it out. They would know how a good and bad tranny will behave. Also, listen to whines and whistles from the car. Normally means something is wrong. To sum it up, if it is truely taken care of, fixing the frontend will not be too bad. If the front end damamge happened because the previous owner was speeding and had to "slow down" chances are he/she does it often and there may be some "wear and tear" and like Alcyone said, you better know a tree that make money. If you find it, let me know too.; ) |

Since no one else has pointed it out... I will..... rear wheels on backwards.......:p
|
I found a few more pics with the wheels the same way:D :p
Are you parting out a 92? I would be interested in some front end parts. |
i think its a good buy! Even if you didnt want to keep the car.... there are alot of parts there that are worth some money. Or you could save for another car.
Is the windshield cracked at all? If so.. they are expensive to replace.. around $1000 |
