headlight go out every month or so
well ever since i bought the car (last August) i have had to replace one of the headlights in the car about once a month. after several pairs of bulbs and many different combonations of makers i thought to ask you guys if you know what is going on. also only one of my fog lights is completly out and in not even getting power and one of my taillights only comes on when i press the brake. thanks if you know something that i don't

You have one of two things. One. Contacts are loose. Spray some electric contact cleaner and make sure your contacts are touching. Two. You have some electrical problem and I will have to think a little more.

What kind or brand of lights are you using? Some bulbs are not very good. :)

With all those symptoms, I'm going to say you're getting too much voltage to the bulb, causing it to burn out prematurely. I'd check all my connections for corrosion and, possibly, some cracks in the wire shielding, or, wires that are just about to break, to start with.

Check the voltage at the alternator/battery after the car has been running for a while. Rev the engine to ~3-4k rpm and measure the voltage - if it is above 14.2 volts, you have an alternator problem - this is potentially deadly to all your onboard electronics - TCU, ECU, door lock module, security module, Radio etc.
Another possibility for bulbs to go out is excessive vibration - are the bulbs/housing properly attached? Do you still have any tires attached to your wheels :-) |
