SVX listed in Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_product_failures

In their listing of Commercial Product Failures in the Automotive Flops section, it says:

"The Subaru SVX was a futuristic car made by Subaru which is the only production car to date to have an all around glass canopy. The car flopped in every market it was sold in due to lack of advertisement, concerns of safety in a rollover, radical styling, and it came at the time when the US was falling in love with the SUV. It was also plagued with known reliability problems due to its heavy weight. Worldwide production of the SVX never topped 40,000 units through a 6 year run."

Click on the Subaru SVX link and it takes you here, with a lot more info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_SVX

Under common problems, it states:

Early transmission failure, brake rotor warp and wheel bearing failure are all common the SVX. Generally these problems are attributed to the SVX's weight, which Subaru engineers did not properly take into consideration when designing the vehicle.

At first glance, it is tempting to blame these failures on the weight of the car, but in actuality, these failures are all due to Subaru engineering errors (that in some cases Subaru fixed). The early automatic transmission failures were caused by a screen installed at the entrance of the transmission cooler. Normal wear debris would build up at the screen and reduce/stop automatic transmission fluid flow and thus kill the transmission. Subaru later corrected this by removing the screen and installing a proper filter in the automatic transmission fluid circuit. The warped brake rotors are due mainly to poor choice of pad material (and possibily inadequate rotor ventilation). The rear wheel bearing problem seems to be due to either defective wheel bearing grease seals or due to improper bearing assembly when the car was manufactured. The 2005 WRX STi uses the same rear wheel bearing and that car weights in at 3350 lbs which is not much less than the SVX.

I have been editing this thing for years, taking out erroneous information, addig things that need updating, etc. I have undone some entries and have them reverted by others over and over again.

Anyone can edit this page and it is a never-ending battle with edits that don't make sense. Lots of misinformation and stuff added just because someone can do it

The photos there of newsvx's engine (great stock example) and the rear hot of the SVX are mine and kave not been messed with. I originally had a photo of my SVX on the main page. Here it is. I believe it was a good example of a well maintained, stock SVX, without distractions.

Wikipedia took it down and replaced it with a "better" example (the first being with the scuffed bumper). Here is the message they sent me.

"Your image is not as good as the old one according to the metrics laid out at WP:CAR"

Bunch of banter about contrast, annoying reflections, inability to see important details, blah, blah...

I just gave up trying.

Inadequate ventilation of the brakes?

I can't vouch for them but several fairly competent people I have met have pointed out that the stock wheel design appears to direct air onto the brakes.

I changed rotors and pads last july (EBC w/greenstuff pads). The pads are already worn (a lot hillclimbing and spirited driving) suggesting my brakes have seen a lot of heat too. No warping.

Even I couldn't get the ALCYONE plate (although I've apparently had it for over 10 years.)

I tried to get an emssions extension online. All I needed to type in was my license plate and title number. I did this over and over again for 20 minutes. All I got back was "vehicle not in database"

Went to the DMV the next day and explained what had happened and gave them my VIN.

They told me there was no "O" available in the system on purpose to eliminate confusion. Evidentally for more then a decade, I have had A-L-C-Y- zero -N-E. I applied correctly and the DMV computer substituted the character and issued me the plate.

Now my plate never looks the same to me.

Try using the "zero" in your state and see if it accepts it.

Would a high quality scan from an original sales brochure be good enough for Wikipedia? And I'm sorry but the picture in the quote do actually have a bit too much reflections. It looks great to us who know these cars but perhaps not so helpful for the uninitiated :)

No. It, they are copyrighted image and cannot be used without written permission from Subaru. All images on their brochures are copyright-protected.

See "copyright and licensing" section.

All images of the SVX which are currently in compliance can be found in the Wikimedia Commons registry HERE

Personally, I always liked this one, which was there for a long time.

Of course if we could find a pearlie, or an SVX refinished in flat black, there wouldn't be a reflection problem...

Bummer. Let's have a "stock SVX" picture compo (Sorry Armando) and present the car properly.

Maybe we could add an "Aftermarket" section to the page saying there is nearly no aftermarket except Ecutune, Delta Speed and Flatt and put up Licon's pster pinup there :D Or maybe a section with "Clubs and forums" linking to german, japanese, NAPA and this site? And still put up black beauty?

They don't allow clubs and forum direct links either. I had the SVXWN listed previously and it was almost immediately deleted and I was warned about adding self-promotion websites that were opinion-based and social in nature.

When it was deleted and revised, I undid the revision and was told that reverting anything done by Wikipedia wasagainst the guidelines constituted a form of vandalism.

Same with Aftermarket. I also had this section at one time. Seems Wikipedia thinks it is a waste of space to have an Aftermarket section which says there is not much of an aftermarket...
