Revolt!
In 1777, the Continental Congress passed the Articles of Confederation. The Articles did not grant Congress the power to tax, only the authority to request funds from states.
The Internal Revenue Service was created in 1791 to collect the Whiskey excise tax. The tax ranged from 7 to 18 cents per gallon. The first suggestion of creating income taxes in the US was during the War of 1812. The idea was dismissed, but returned with the Tax Act of 1861 which was passed but not implemented. A new Tax Act was passed and put in force in 1862 to help finance the Civil War. Anyone care to guess what the income tax rates were in 1862? Compliance, by the way, was very low. :p Also, what was the estimated total amount of taxes paid by Americans as a percentage of average income at the outbreak of the American Revolution? Taxes imposed by an out-of-touch government, by the way, were one of the major reasons for the War of Independence in the first place. Perhaps it is time for another revolt?! :eek: ;) |
I'd have to be part of the peoples malitia instead of the army(and its others) wont take me cause I've got a very minor heart problem. Even though I'm probably more fit than half of the flunkies they get.

Shall I switch to a more interesting topic? :p According to Michael Mann there are four sources of social power: ideological, economic, military and political. Which of these sources of social power should be employed by the US if it is to successfully control Iraq? Shall I tell a joke? This guy is walking on the beach somewhere in California. He sees a lamp, rubs it, and a Genie comes out. The genie is so happy that he decides to grant one wish to the lucky guy. The guy thinks about it and says, "I'd like you to build a highway to Hawaii because I am afraid to fly. The genie responds that this can't be done because it would be technologically impossible considering the depth of the ocean and the distance to Hawaii. So he asks the guy to wish for something else. The guy thinks about it and, very enthusiastically, wishes he would understand women. The genie than said, "Do you want your highway to have 2 or 4 lanes?" Im just guessing that in the 1800's the % of taxes were like 1% or less, and we revolted from brittian because the taxes were half as bad as they are today. Times change...people have money and the economy does stuff diffrent than it did. As for women, Would the 4 lanes be set next to eachother or stacked up all double decker style? I think Im more concerned about the speed limit on the bridge. takes a long long time to drive there on the bridge if the speed limit is 55. the bridge would be hard to make but understan..OOOH, LOL, i get the joke now. Drum roll........................... High enough to tick off at least half of the people. :D As for the successful control of Iraq, they've already tried all but ideological. And ideological will cause it to become what his latest excuse is trying for it not to become. A fundamentalist state. I want 4 lanes to anticipate growth. :) Understanding women will just complicate things. |
Ok, a couple things.
1. The constitution was ratified by all states by 1791. That nullified the Articles of Confederation. 2. The constitution grants congress the right to tax (enforcement in the constitution is vague because at the time, people didn't know if taxes were under the umbrella of the necessary and proper clause). However, the 16th amendment allows the government to make and enforce an income tax. 3. Taxes wouldn't be such an issue if Americans could justify the expense. President Bush's approval rating at the moment is under 40%..which is very, very low. From this poll, we can tell that Americans are not approving of how the administration is spending their money. Maybe it's time to get people in office who spend money according to how their constituents want it. On my own opinion: I'd rather we spend in the black and not in the red. The national debt at this moment is nearing 8 trillion dollars. When Clinton was elected in 92, it was closing in on 4 trillion (and it stayed right around there for most of his duration in office). I think the "war in Iraq" and "war on Terror" are two big wastes of money. I think it's time we wake up and smell the roses. |
