odd problem
 

I have a knocking noise coming from the passenger side bank of cylinders. It isn't there when the car is cold but gets loud when it heats up. Also, that side is considerably warmer than the other side . I replaced the timing belt about 2 months ago. Could I have been running with that side off a tooth? Please don't tell me I have a piston about to go through the fender, I've had that problem with the last 2 cars I've owned(the first was due to wear, the second was due to cronic crank walk that Mitsubishi REFUSES to recall on their 2nd gen Eclipses)
Any ideas?

oh yeah, it also stutters a little bit

If the belt were a tooth or two off it can make the car run hot, sluggish or even make it miss at times. Depending on how hot the one side gets your worries could be real.

well, it's retimed...
 

and running smooth like it should. It still has a little bit of a stutter to it but it is getting better. The noise is not as loud and seems to be getting softer as well. When I opened it up and set it at TDC I noticed that both cam timing marks were off, the right bank was off a good 4 teeth and the left was off 2. :eek: I'm surprised that it ran. It's making that high pitched sound of air getting sucked in past valves again.:D

Glad to hear you found the problem. Just take it easy for a day or two and watch the temp., etc. High temp from timing problems make pistons hot also and since oil is squirted at them from underneath changing oil soon is probably a good idea too.
