5spd

hey, i asked some ?'s before about a 5spd swap. does anyone know if a 1990 suby loyal awd 5spd will work, instead of the legacy??

nubs 06-14-2002 08:35 PM

Yes I know and no it will not work. It is a completly different type of engine, even if it would bolt up it probably would not last long.Loyales have a 90 hp motor. The torque and hp of an EG33 would probably grenade it in a heartbeat.

alacrity024 06-15-2002 04:02 AM

Well, the thing here is:

The transmission in a '90 loyale is essentially the same thing as the transmission in a '92 legacy, an '85 brat and a '96 WRX. The only things that change are some linkage elements and (obviously) clutch systems. If you fir it with the proper clutch and can properly mount it, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Granted I'm no transmission expert, my word should absolutely not be taken for truth, merely speculation. Subaru has been using the same five-speed for about twenty+ years. Their first all-new manual transmission came with the new WRX STi.

tranny

Not in my wildest dreams would I ever bother to put a Loyale tranny into the SVX. Even the Legacy tranny isn't 100% capable of handling the 3.3. The turbo Legacy's were only good for 165 HP, much less than the SVX. Too much rough play and the Legacy tranny will call it a day. I suppose you could baby one for a while.....take off nice and slow and not accelerate too fast.....but who wants to baby a stickshift??? When I convert my SVX I'm going to do it right and put in something that can handle the 3.3 when floored.

The Loyal tranny will NOT bolt up to the SVX's 3.3.
The internals are probably the same, but the bell housing is different.

Thanks for backing me up on this one Huck. I usually keep quiet about most things unless I am 100% sure of my answer.:)

No problem, just helping people to not make any mistake that I've made.

I learned this buy getting a XT-6 5-speed(which I thought had the new bell housing) for my swap, turns out it has the same bell housing as the 80's Subaru's GL's and XT's. (It does have a nice feature that the newer gen. doesn't have, a Diff Lock, to lock the front and rear into 50/50 split)

The only trannies that will bolt right up are the Legacy/Impreza trannies.

5 speed

Huck,

How is your 5 speed holding up? Any problems/worn out clutches? Can it handle a fast get away? I'd like to convert mine this summer, and I'm wondering if there's anything you'd like to add to your instructions /advice on the swap?

I've still not had any problems with it.
I'm still running the cheap clutch, which works fine for everyday driving, but will slip if I try to do a hard launch, don't get me wrong, it'll take off pretty quick, but if I try a drag strip launch, it will just smoke the clutch (4-50 series tires biting against a cheap clutch:rolleyes: ).

Overall, I'm quite happy with it, you couldn't make me put an auto back in it:D Once I finally wear oout hte cheap clutch and replace it with a high performance one, I think it'll be near heaven.

Nothing to add to the swap that I can think of.

5 speed install

I talked to the Master Tech at our local Suby dealer today about the tranny swap. He said he'd love to do it, but he doesn't do side projects anymore and I would have to go through the shop to do it. He said to plan on 20 hours of labor (OUCH)! I sure wish I had some mechanical abilities beyond the basic stuff!

Huck, what exactly did your 5 speed come out of? Have you found a high performance clutch and if so, how much is it?

Mine came out of an Impreza, a 95 2 door.

I plan on getting the ACT Performance Clutch kit, This kit contains (1) ACT Pressure Plate, (1) ACT Clutch Disk (1) ACT Through Out Bearing(1) ACT Pilot Bearing (1) Pilot Tool

I'm running that ACT clutch and it can hold the power for sure, but if you let it slip too much the smell is terrible!

Right now I'm at about 1500 miles on the 5 speed and it has been problem-free thus far. I had to pick up my parents from the airport in my mother's Infiniti I30t with a stick today. That car, which I previously thought was pretty fast (upper 6 second 0-60 as I recall), seems clumsy and slow compared to my SVX now.

fwiw...

tranny

Alex,

Which 5 speed did you use for the conversion (year/model)?

David

alex_umn 06-20-2002 04:02 PM

Mine came out of a 98 Legacy GT, and it is basically the same as the one Huck used (smae ratios, etc) with the exception that I am using a hydraulic clutch setup.

If you go and search in the mods forum there's a bunch of stuff in there on this subject...

Phast SVX 06-20-2002 11:31 PM

hmm

how many hours would you say the install took? Im looking into thsi with my new project car, as the tranny is shot, and is VERY noisy, so i dont know if im even eligable for a core refund. Is it normal for a trannsmission to make alot of noise, even in netrual when revving? If not, then a 5speed is definty in my future
