I have a ring and pinion gear.

As for fwd manuals that work, look for pre 95 imprezas and legacys. Not going to be easy to find, but they are around. Might even get a whole car for pretty cheap.

The early Imprezas run a different spline on the axle stubs....so try to find a Legacy, as they all run the same splines as the SVX, that way you're axles will work

As Huck said. I think it was 93-94.5 5 speed manuals that ran the EA-82 style splines. Biggest problem I think you'll find is coming up with a suitable clutch set up for the added torque. The FWD Subaru tranny dates back to the 70s. Check out www.car-part.com for some sources.

^ why would a clutch be hard to find? i was under the impression that the Clutch is the same for AWDs and FWDs.... there is a gaggle of heavy duty none turbo clutches out there.

Re: FWD Manual Conv.

I figure the FWD won't need a great clutch, as the tires will break loose so easy:D

It is not the same. Disc from Subaru is I believe the same but pressure plate is not. Don't know what the difference is and if one could be substituted for the other. I know when I converted my XT6 fwder to a 5 speed I had some clutch issues.

Re: FWD Manual Conv.

^ idk, i bet if you get a matching clutch, plate and flywheel from a subaru with a push style transmission it should work. wouldn't go and order parts without some more research, but even if there are different part numbers it doesn't mean it wont work. a 2.2 legacy has a different clutch and part number than a 2.5 legacy, but you can still use either one in either legacy and it would work. (2.5 legacy has a slightly larger disk)

one thing to double check would be something like the size of the input shaft could be different.

but in any case, there are 100s of shops that build from scratch clutches that could produce anything you ever wanted. i know we have one here in town, that a lot of the local car guys use. and they are never more expensive than say an ACT.

EDIT:
From what i can find with a FWD legacy's tranny, the clutches are interchangeable with from FWD to AWD, but with the imprezas they are not (because of the input shaft size). so basically, any Push style 2.5 clutch and pressure plate should work with a FWD legacy tranny.

Re: FWD Manual Conv.

Subaru stopped making FWD cars in 1996 so the newest FWD tranny you'll find is 1995.

Re: FWD Manual Conv.

If you are still set on doing this and would like one, there is a 93 fwd Legacy here with 123k on the clock. Was a donation car so it was running when it came in. PM me if interested...
