dash lights coming on and off

hi wondering if you could help my dash lights keep coming on and off namely the steering /battery /stop lamp /brake fluid and antilocking brake lights iv had all of the above checked and every thing is ok .
i thought it might be an earthing problem and fotted a grounding kit but it only improved every thing els.
when you pull the window switch or use one of the other bettons after a will thy go out for a will and then come back on .
any help would be greatly apretiated as im beging to loos the rag with it.

cheers eck

that should be a bad connection somewhere

i have the same thing - i installed an antirust device and sometimes- for some reason the positive wire that goes into one side of the fuse before the battery doesn't touch and mentioned lights come on...and when it touchs again. it goes away.
in my case it's a non touching situation.

hope that helps a bit

Have your alternator checked and check the terminals and leads off the battery for loose/corroded/split connections. follow the ground cables from the battery and make sure there attaching points are clean and tight. Good luck.

Hello eck

Congrats on winning the Road and Track guide on eBay this evening!;)

All the lights coming on like that can be an alternator problem sometimes. You need to get an electrical shop to look at it. The alternator has the regulator inside it, plus the charging circuitry. If the alternator has a bad bearing or the regulator is bust, it can cause all the dash lights to come on.

They should be able to check if the charging circuit is healthy, and check your volts when the engine is running.

If it is another fault it can be hard to find. I remember someone had a wiring problem like you describe. One of the wires in a loom [a live wire] had got chafed coming through the bulkhead and was touching metal. When the damaged wire was found and taped up, all was OK again.

I still think yours will prove to be the alternator.

Joe:)

Very nice car, BTW.:D

If the alt. bearing was bad, it would probably be noisy and would seize up too right...Maybe the brushes inside are worn down.

The symptoms described indicate an alternator fault which has been reported here many times. However the exact cause is rather obscure and the reason, as far as I am aware, has not been always properly analyzed and described.

The dash indicator lights test circuit, incorporates blocking diodes to eliminate a sneak circuit which would otherwise exist. In an event involving faults within the alternator rectifier network, alternating current is induced on line. The result is pulses of reverse voltage, which pass the blocking diodes in the test circuit and energise the indicator lights.

Mechanical or other faults involving the alternator, will not result in this exact symptom. The fault involves the failure of rectifier diodes within the alternator, but that said, additional faults could exist in tandem.
