Got donor car, question about engine replacement

i`ve finally got this:

http://s2.ipicture.ru/uploads/201308...s/WmMFQ9An.jpg

http://s2.ipicture.ru/uploads/201308...s/3dTcXTPg.jpg

VIN plate:
http://s2.ipicture.ru/uploads/201308...s/7kR25GGM.jpg

The engine was replaced by previous owner to, i guess, JDM engine, because it has no EGR, right?

I wonder why the car has no O2 sensors at all, even harness, this is the picture of exaust, it all stock, but has no slots for O2 sensors:

http://s2.ipicture.ru/uploads/201308...s/mXectRMW.jpg

How could it be?!

Tranny is 4.44:
http://s2.ipicture.ru/uploads/201308...s/v6rWt2pL.jpg

Is this from Legacy turbo?

I compared ECU`s:
http://s2.ipicture.ru/uploads/201308...s/LUqWbpST.jpg

This have RD7 code, mine old has different, RC7 or something like that, i dont remember exactly..

well, the question is - can i replace my old engine with this one, leaving my old harness and ECU with ECUTune stage 1 chip?

Thanks!

Re: Got donor car, question about engine replacement

The engine should be a straight swap.

The lack of EGR and the missing O2 sensors, is odd as there was an model that had no emission gear on it at all, and ran on leaded gas, still had the converters, but just the honey comb block without the catalyst coating. Was made for the oil producing East.

Harvey.

From my pita exp, don't get water on the engine plugs lol.

Re: Got donor car, question about engine replacement

The tranny appears to be original to the car - and a VTD type. If you google the number you get UK and NZ (!) hits :-)

How did you come up with the idea it's 4.444?

Re: Got donor car, question about engine replacement

to Tapani:
Previous owner said that the tranny was rebuilt and changed to 4.44.. maybe hes wrong
well, considering number, its 3.71 VTD?

i could count the differentials teeth to be sure?
And will it work with my old USDS TCU with QC?

To Harvey:
So its ok to have no EGR and O2 sensors on it? What to to do with my O2 sensors? plug them or leave unplugged?

Re: Got donor car, question about engine replacement

Technically it could be rebuilt and just have the 4.44 gears swapped out and still be a vtd.

As far as the 02's if your ecu requires them, run them. I'd imagine youd get better mileage with them than without.

Mate the VTD won't work with the US TCU. You would have to change a lot of gear out of the doner, to fit that box.

Yes it will run without the O2 sensors, but it would be better to fit them.

Yes the box, TCU, diff, cross member, wring, tailshaft.
If the box has been converted to 4.44, you will have a problem with the way the TCU reads the speed sensors, as the diff ratio number is embedded in the TCU, so it will read the the speeds wrong.

Harvey.

Re: Got donor car, question about engine replacement

Couldn't you swap the speed sensor from the USM tranny? That would take care of the wiring....

Then get a JDM chip and fit that to a modified US TCU .

The tail shaft is the same as is the cross member - just the rear support rubber cushions are different - but you get those from the donor car - as you get the diff too.

I strongly doubt that the gearing has been changed - it's possible, though.

Did I miss something?

The VTD TCU will drive the speedo ok, its just the gear box will read the box sensors that are using the programed 'Diff ratio', so all the changes will be a lot higher.
The box is about 100mm longer that the US box, so he can use all the bits from the donor car.
You know:), some people do, do these sort of conversions.

Thanks Tapani and Harvey, you guys help me a lot all the time;)

Well, finally, for swap from my US 3.54 AWD to that UK 3.7 VTD, I need:
1. Box -from donor
2. Rear diff -from donor
3. Crossmember -from donor (will it fit directly to body?)
4. Tail shaft - actually, I don't know what's that, but it should be in donor, is this the rear end of the box?
5. TCU -from donor (does it have the same connectors as US TCU? Will QC work with it? What about power mode mod and manual button on selector? What about stock power mode - will it work as usual?)
6. Harness -can I leave US harness, or I need to modify? and what exactly if yes..

this is about tranny.

Engine is direct swap as I read before, so its not a problem.
what about ECU? Now I have 92US ECU with stage 1 chip, will it work on it? or I need to order JDM TCU and ecu chips from Michael?

Sorry, a lot of questions, but they cover all the possible problems

Re: Got donor car, question about engine replacement

Well,

I do not recall the boxes being any different in length.

I have a 1996 JDM VTD box in a 1992 USM car controlled by a USM TCU fitted with a chip burned with 1996 JDM firmware (with correct 3.7 ratios programmed). I know there's a difference between the EU and JDM/USM (front) speed sensors - but I think these can be swapped so that you can keep the USM speedo like I have.

The tailshaft (prop) is the same, same length and all. I still run the USM cross member - only the rear mounts are different, but they do bolt on.

See "traction project" in the tranny section.

Yes all the bits from the donor car for the drive line. Tail shaft is the shaft from the gearbox to the rear diff.

Yes the TCU will plug into your car, but it will depend on where the car is from, if it has a speed sensor on the front diff. just in front of the diff dip stick it is from JDM and will plug in ok. If it does not have that speed sensor at the front diff, it is a Euro and it is inside the box, and will need a wire from the gearbox front speed sensor to the TCU.

The QC, and manual button will be normal. The Power mode will depend on where the car is from, JDM VTD have a button on the shifter for the power mode.
The other VTD (Aust,UK, and others) don't have a power button, just have the US type power mode. Does the donor car have the Power button on the shifter?

If it has a 3.7:1 diff ratio, your US ECU, and the VTD TCU can plug in without a problem. If it has a 4.44:1 diff ratio, you will need a TCU chip with the diff ratio number changed, to have the box change gear at the right rpm.

Re: Got donor car, question about engine replacement

Thanks Harvey for detailed answer!

I`ve removed the box:

http://s2.ipicture.ru/uploads/201308...s/R269pSR1.jpg

http://s2.ipicture.ru/uploads/201308...s/QK4og23v.jpg

Considering you said and photos, its a Euro box, right?

The ATF was brown, looks very old and bad, im not sure is it burned, it doesnt smell like
http://s2.ipicture.ru/uploads/201308...s/4pUgJ5sn.jpg

The shifter doesnt have power button, so its standard euro i guess

Well, what to do with harness if its euro box? I tried to find here how to, but found nothing
the picture of the connector, the harness comes from plate where shifter cable connected:

Thanks!
