Japanese Transmission in American SVX
 

Hi, I have a 95 svx. My transmission recently went out, and I purchased a transmission, but it is the Japanese kind. The guys fixing my car say that it doesn't fit and the mounts in the back are different.

I don't know much about cars, and even less about putting parts in them. Im really in a lousy situation here, as I currently have no means of transportation (and not enough money to get a different car).

Any help would be much appreciated. Is it possible to somehow make this work? If I have to get parts, does anyone know good places to get them?

did you buy an auto or manual tranny? do you have pics to post so we have a better idea?

Assuming you purchased an automatic Jspec transmission, you may have more than just brackets to worry about.

Correct me if I'm wrong network, but wouldn't he also need a new rear diff, and possible a new computer?

Though, if whole things falls through, you might be able to do a trade depending on your situation/location.

The tranny i got I can return I believe.

The svx I have is a black 95 lsi. Its got some dents and bumper damage. Bout 66k miles on it. Apparantly something in the tranny chipped or something.

Well hate to break it to ya, but overall I'm really no help. I'm new to the SVX myself. I've only had my 92 for a month now.

But someone here will definitely help you out. I've found that this is very good community.

what year is the transmission you purchased??

The jdm svx trasmission had a diffnt final drive ratio...meaning you'd have to swap out rear diffs as well. Prettysure the wiring is completely diffrent for the tcu (transmission controll unit), as the JDM transmissions computer bits were very diffrent. Prety sure it also featured a viscous center diff rather t....Um, let me rephrase this

The JDM transmission has stuff that they use in modern wrx's, and other stuff no other car has...and is way cooler than the usdm one, but I think its not going to be a neighborhood mechanic friendly swap

Where did you get this transmisson? That is strange that you would find one here in the States. :confused: :)

My dad found it in New Jersey. I think its a 94, but I am not sure.

That sucks that all that needs to be done. I don't know what I am going to do lol.

return it and get the right trans... It cannot be the correct one

Actually not to unusual, Earl. Some of the Japanese engine importers are getting the whole drive train--motor with tranny attached. They must not be aware that the JDM tranny is not a marketable item. As we all know there are also motor intake differences as indicated in a recent thread on here where a member is selling the JDM intake off the imported engine he bought. One of the JDM engine importers on Ebay was selling an engine recently and it was pictured with the tranny attached which was being sold separately.

there are no differences in intakes... you just need to switch the brake booster nipple from the right side to the left.

The JDM engine that my brother got for the 300zx came with the transmission attached. I looked into getting a JDM trans for my SVX from the same guy, but soon found that I needed more than the transmission.


Good luck foofmonger. I know how it is to be without a car. I was for 9 months. I had to carpool or borrow my friends Echo. I would have walked but I'm in the country part of Frederick county:rolleyes:. I definitely had SVX withdrawl.

I personally don't know as I have never had anything to do with the JDM version or even read up on it. I was just taking the word of a member posting that there were differences in the one he had.
